The UFC’s biggest belt is up for grabs in Anaheim, CA tonight as UFC heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier defends versus Stipe Miocic (the man he claimed that title from last July).
Cormier vs. Miocic 1 didn’t last very long. That contest saw Cormier KO Miocic with 30 seconds remaining of the first round. The win made DC a champ-champ (an increasingly common title in these past few years). Since winning the belt, Cormier beat Derrick Lewis at UFC 230. This is Miocic’s first fight since losing the title. Will Cormier send Miocic down and out again, or will Miocic exact revenge and get back on top?
The remainder of the main card promises at least two fights with title implications. The co-main is a welterweight bout between former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and the mercurial Nate Diaz; who hasn’t fought since dropping a decision to Conor McGregor in 2016. Before that Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa will duel with a UFC middleweight title shot on the horizon for the winner.
Rounding out the main card is a featherweight bout between Gabriel Benitez and Sodiq Yusuff and a middleweight fight between Derek Brunson and Ian Heinisch.
The prelim card starts at 8PM ET on ESPN. That’s headlined by lightweights Devonte Smith and late replacement Khama Worthy, for some reason. Also on the card is Raphael Assuncao vs. Cory Sandhagen (bantamweight), Christos Giagos vs. Drakkar Klose (lightweight), and Manny Bermudez vs. Casey Kenny (catchweight – 140 lbs).
There’s three early prelims on tap. Those include Hannah Cifers vs. Jodie Esquibel (strawweight), Kyung Ho Kang vs. Brandon Davis (bantamweight), and Sabina Mazo vs. Shana Dobson (flyweight).
