Daniel Cormier is still uncertain about retiring after his loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241. But if there’s one thing that the now former UFC heavyweight champion is certain about at the moment, it’s getting to run it back with Miocic and do things correctly.
“I don’t have to fight. I make a lot of money outside of the Octagon, I’ve made a lot of money fighting, and I’ve done a lot of special things,” Cormier told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto in a locker room interview.
“It would essentially be a matter of me wanting to go back and right the wrong of this fight tonight. That would be the only thing that would make me come back to fight, I guess.”
Cormier was asked whether or not he intends to continue his life as a professional athlete. Like his retirement plans, “DC” does not want to act upon impulse.
“I don’t know that right now. Everything right now feels like No, but it’s emotional,” he said. “You just lost. I think you ask yourself that question in a couple of weeks when everything slows down and you’re surrounded by the people that really love you and life becomes normal again.
“When life becomes normal again, I should ask myself that question, “Do I want to be a professional athlete anymore?” because there is no shortcut in it,” he continued. “I worked so extremely hard to try and prepare myself to win this fight, and I lost. So I’d have to figure it out.”
Cormier was ahead in the judges’ scorecards for the first two rounds, before he was stopped in the fourth. He now drops to a record of 22-2 (with 1 NC and 15 wins by stoppage).
