Following his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 this past Saturday (Sept. 7, 2019) in Abu Dhabi (see it), Dustin Poirier hinted at the possibility of an early retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA).
Now a few days removed from the crushing defeat, “The Diamond” assures everyone that he will keep chugging along. In fact, he already has an opponent in mind, posting on social media that he wants to rematch ex-UFC dual-champion, Conor McGregor, for his comeback fight.
The two men initially went toe-to-toe at UFC 178 back in 2014, with “Notorious” scoring a first round technical knockout win over Poirier in what was McGregor’s fourth fight for the promotion.
Since then, the careers of both men have taken slightly different paths, as McGregor has only competed seven times inside the Octagon and claimed the Featherweight and Lightweight titles along the way (and got stripped of both), while “The Diamond” has fought 16 times during that same span and won the interim 155-pound title.
Getting a rematch against McGregor might prove to be a tough task for Poirier, though, because the fiery Irishman — for whatever reason — thinks he can get a rematch against Khabib despite getting choked out by him in his last fight.
Unless the Moscow rematch tweet was somehow meant for Poirier?
