Jorge Masvidal has explained why the UFC didn’t match him up with Conor McGregor after his UFC 239 win.
Top UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal has said the UFC didn’t let him fight former two-division champion Conor McGregor.
Following Masvidal’s record-breaking five-second KO over Ben Askren at UFC 239 in July, Masvidal called out the ‘f-cking G’ Conor McGregor for a fight, but UFC president Dana White shut down that matchup by saying Masvidal was “too big” for the Irishman.
Appearing on Thursday on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’, Masvidal explained why the UFC wouldn’t allow the fight to take place.
“That fight…the president deemed it not good because they don’t want a murder charge on them,” said Masvidal. “They’re not going to allow that to happen.
“The president himself already said it, so I don’t want to go to jail for killing nobody,” he said. “It’s not what I want to do. I’m here to compete and to keep beating people up.”
Masvidal will fight Nate Diaz at UFC 244, in a fight that the UFC are trying to make a special ‘BMF’ title for. Diaz (20-11) returned to MMA after three years away from the cage in August to defeat Anthony Pettis by unanimous decision, he campaigned for the fight with Masvidal in his post-fight interview.
“The president said we couldn’t compete because I’m too much man, so that can’t happen,” he said. “We’re different spectrums. [Dana White] is not going to allow that to happen.”
UFC 244 takes place on November 2nd at Madison Square Garden. Masvidal’s fight with Diaz will serve as the main event on the night.
