Denmark, Copenhagen, gets its first taste of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) action this Saturday (Sept. 18, 2019) when the world’s largest fight promotion hits Royal Arena, bringing with it a clash of all-action Middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier. Olympic Greco-Roman medalist Mark O. Madsen makes his Octagon debut in UFC Fight Night 160’s co-feature against Italy’s Danilo Belluardo, while another Nordic grappling sensation faces a stiff test as Gunnar Nelson takes on late replacement Gilbert Burns.
UFC 243’s on the horizon, which means it’s time to save up for that pay-per-view (PPV) price. Here’s how:
What Went Wrong at UFC Fight Night 159?
I recommended a bet on Vinicius Moreira, an extremely large man with a great top game, on the assumption that he would make an effort to use said top game against Paul Craig. Instead, he decided to pull guard, which once again got him knocked the hell out in transition as he got to his feet. Fight to your strengths, Vinny.

Thoughts: The thing about betting on this sport as compared to, say, basketball or football is that a stray strike can upend the most seemingly insurmountable leads. That’s why I love betting on fights with severe wrestling disparities — it’s a lot harder to make a miraculous comeback when you spend half the fight stuck on your back. In that spirit, let’s go with Macy Chiasson and Jack Shore.
The Chiasson pick should be self-explanatory. She’s looked like an absolute monster in the Octagon and Lansberg got (wo)manhandled by Yana Kunitskaya two fights back. Chiasson has the physical strength and wrestling prowess to do the same, plus some gnarly ground-and-pound with which to end it inside the distance. Like Cyborg before her, use her to beef up all of your picks.
Shore is a beast, and while I’m not sure he’ll ever be a true elite, he looks fit to run over Hernandez. Not only is he huge for the weight, nullifying Hernandez’s long-range boxing offense and putting the knockdown-prone “Suave” in danger, but his onslaught of trips and ironclad top control look like more than he can handle.
In other words, bank on the Welshman to dominate.
I like a bit on Marc Diakiese, too. He looked terrific against Joe Duffy, and though he has three recent losses on his record, falling to guys like Nasrat Haqparast and Dan Hooker is less damning than Vannata drawing with Matt Frevola. I have more faith in Diakiese’s resurgence than in Vannata’s, as the latter only came about thanks to UFC signing the massively incompetent Marcos Mariano.
UFC Fight Night 160 Odds For The Main Card:
Jack Hermansson (-235) vs. Jared Cannonier (+195)
Mark Madsen (-600) vs. Danilo Belluardo (+450)
Gilbert Burns (-145) vs. Gunnar Nelson (+125)
Khalil Rountree (-135) vs. Ion Cutelaba (+115)

Alex Oliveira (-155) vs. Nicolas Dalby (+135)
Thoughts: Nicolas Dalby has a storied tradition of getting physically out-classed by ostensibly technically inferior opponents. Oliveira — an absolute tank of a Welterweight — fits that bill nicely. His enormous power bodes ill for Dalby, who has a habit of getting dropped early. Plus, “Cowboy” is strong enough to just wrangle Dalby to the ground if things get hairy.
The concern is that Oliveira’s a bit of a frontrunner — when opponents withstand his early onslaught, he can start to crumble. Dalby has a knack for surviving early adversity to come on strong late, making that a real possibility, but he also doesn’t hit as hard as Yancy Medeiros or Mike Perry. Oliveira should be able to tank the return fire and muscle out a win.
