Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is all set for its UFC Fight Night 160 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, taking place Sat. afternoon (Sept. 28, 2019) inside Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, live on ESPN+ with a “Prelims” start time of 11 a.m. ET (main card kicks off at 2 p.m. ET). UFC Copenhagen will be headlined by the middleweight showdown between rising contenders Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier. Elsewhere on the card, Olympic wrestler Mark Madsen makes his Octagon debut against Danilo Belluardo in the lightweight co-main event, while grappling standouts Gunnar Nelson and Gilbert Burns collide at 170 pounds. In addition, Ion Cutelaba takes on Muay Thai specialist Khalil Rountree in the light heavyweight division, which is where Michal Oleksiejczuk goes head-to-head with the venerable Ovince Saint Preux.

Hermansson shoots off a Cannonier low kick, hits a suplex, and takes the back. One minute in. Cannonier turns and makes his way to the feet, pressing him against the fence. Hermansson hip toss, can’t maintain, eats an uppercut and they separate. Leg kick from Hermansson two minutes in. Another leg kick, this one to the calf. Hermansson shoots from way out, stuffed. Cannonier counter right just blocked. Calf kick lands. Two minutes to go.

Hard calf kick from Cannonier. Hermansson shoots, denied, lands a knee downstairs. Low kick and jab. One minute to go. Lead right from Cannonier. Calf kick connects. Inside low kick. Hermansson lands a left hook. Calf kick buckles Hermansson. 10-9 Cannonier.

Round 2: As Hermansson ducks in for a takedown, Cannonier cracks him with an uppercut and follows him down into top position. The punches continue to pile up and here comes the ref.

155 lbs.: Danilo Belluardo vs. Mark Madsen

Round 1: Madsen orthodox, Belluardo southpaw. Madson punches his way in, takes him to the fence, muscles him down after a few attempts. Punches and elbows from Madsen. He briefly looks for a guillotine, goes back to elbows. Jackhammer right hands come down and Belluardo covers up, prompting the finish.

Final result: Madsen def. Belluardo by TKO (punches)


170 lbs.: Gunnar Nelson vs. Gilbert Burns

Round 1: Low kicks from Burns. Left hook after Nelson catches a kick. One minute in. Low kick from Nelson. Lead left hook. Burns lands one two minutes in. Nelson tries a 2-3. Burns head kick attempt. Low kick lands. Two minutes to go.

Burns lands a knee inside. Low kick. Nelson side kick from southpaw. Lead hook, eats an uppercut from Burns. One minute to go. Burns gets double underhooks and puts him on the fence, tries a trip but ends up on the bottom. He looks for a leg, can’t get it. Nelson postured over him. 10-9 Burns.

Round 2: Burns lands a low kick. Right hand falls short. Side kick from Nelson. Good straight left. Burns low kick a minute in. Nelson lands a hard one in return. He flurries and puts Burns on the fence. He tries an uppercut on the break, puts him on the fence again two minutes in. They separate. Burns lands a leg kick and left hook, just misses with a right hand. Nelson changes levels in return. Two minutes to go.

Trading knees against the fence. They separate. Better takedown entry for Nelson, gets to the rear waist lock and takes him to the fence. Burns responds with a hip toss and they scramble up. Burns follows up with a flying knee and sprawls on a shot with a minute to go. He wraps up an anaconda choke, tries to roll. He loses his grip, still in the front headlock. He forces Nelson to his back and tries to throw. 10-9 Burns.

Round 3: Trading low kicks to start. Nelson catches a kick and gets the rear waist lock, Burns turns and gets an underhook. He gets a bit of space and lands a hard right hand a minute in. They separate, Nelson punches back into the clinch. Changes levels, no dice. They trade on the break, Nelson re-engages two minutes in. Both with some short strikes. They separate. Burns answers a body shot with an overhand right. Two minutes to go.

Nelson cracks him with a lead right, eats a knee in return. Burns calf kick answered in kind. Head kick just misses. Another calf kick and Nelson puts him on the fence again. One minute to go. Burns reverses position and hits a high-amplitude takedown. He spins to Nelson’s back, Nelson spins to his feet before he can establish. Burns keeps him against the fence until the bell. 10-9 Burns.

205 lbs.: Ion Cutelaba vs. Khalil Rountree

Round 1: Counter right and a hard body kick by Rountree, which Cutelaba catches for a takedown. Rountree scrambles, tripped back, down, stands again. Cutelaba gets his leg high and takes him down again a minute in. Elbow exchange and they separate. Rountree with a counter two-piece. Cutelaba lands a Superman punch and ducks a left hand for a takdeown into guard. Hard elbows. Nasty shots two minutes in. Rountree uses the fence to stand, gets foot swept again. Cutelaba fires an artillery barrage of punches and elbows and there’s the stoppage.

Final result: Cutelaba def. Rountree by TKO (elbows and punches)


205 lbs.: Michal Oleksiejczuk vs. Ovince Saint Preux

Round 1: Oleksiejczuk on the advance, throwing plenty. Overhand left connects. Counter knee from Saint Preux. Oleksiejczuk clips him with a left in return and bangs the body. Hard left downstairs. He continues to chase Saint Preux, who looks for a takedown. He takes Oleksiejczuk to the fence a minute in. Oleksiejczuk reverses. 3-32 lands for him, then a straight left drops Saint Preux. OSP spins hard for a kimura, loses it, eats lefts on his knees. Oleksiejczuk digs a left to the body when they stand. Two minutes in. Another hard left downstairs. Lead overhand. Straight left. Again, 1-2. Another left. Saint Preux right hook. Two minutes to go.

Saint Preux with an uppercut. Oleksiejczuk lands a harder one, gets knocked back by a combination. Oleksiejczuk 1-2 and uppercut. Right hook. Oleksiejczuk still marching forward. One minute to go. Oleksiejczuk lands a body shot and a left upstairs before tying up on the fence. Saint Preux tries a head kick on the break. 10-9 Oleksiejczuk.

Round 2: Lead left form Oleksiejczuk met by a side kick. Brief clinch. Check hook from Saint Preux. Oleksiejczuk left cross on the advance. Saint Preux comes back with a body kick, eats another overhand left. Saint Preux tries a level elbow a minute in. Short right hand and side kick. Clinch uppercut and body knee land for him. Dalby tries to spin in return, eats a right cross. Two minutes in. Dalby chases him with a combination. Oliveira head kick attempt. Dalby combination doesn’t connect. He shoots under an Oliveira combo, denied. Two minutes to go.

Oliveira puts him on the fence. Dalby reverses to the crowd’s delight. Oliveira responds with a takedown with a minute to go. On top in guard. He postures up, lands a few punches. Dalby scrambles to his knees and hits his own takedown at the bell. 10-9 Oliveira.

Round 2: Oliveira misses with a 1-2. He takes an eye poke, recovers for a bit. Oliveira fires a combination inside, lands an uppercut but eats a head kick. He catches it and ties up a minute in. Dalby hits the switch for a takedown into guard. Two minutes in. Dalby passes to half guard. Two minutes to go.

Oliveira trying to use the fence to stand, eats a series of right hands. He makes it up, gets pressed against the fence. They separate and Dalby fires a combination. Knee slips through and he ties up. Oliveira hits a hip toss and looks for the back, only for Dalby to slip out the back door. Oliveira fires some illegal upkicks and gets told off by the ref, who restarts them on the feet because he’s an idiot. Big left hook from Oliveira. 10-9 Dalby.

Round 3: Dalby just misses with a head kick. Good jab. Oliveira fires a low kick and Dalby shoots, putting him on the fence. Oliveira reverses position. One minute in. He slams Dalby to the mat from the body lock, landing in side control. Two minutes in. Back to half guard. Ref stands them up despite Oliveira throwing. Two minutes to go.

Oliveira shoots right back in. Dalby tries the switch again, doesn’t get it but scrambles his way through into top position. Oliveira looking for a triangle. Nothing doing and Dalby hops from half guard to mount. Here come the punches and now he’s looking for an arm triangle. Loses it. He gets the gift wrap and smashes Oliveira with some punches and elbows. 10-9 Dalby but the ref is entirely responsible for it.

Final result: Dalby def. Oliveira by unanimous decision


185 lbs.: Alen Amedovski vs. John Phillips

Round 1: Amedovski’s game to throw with him and they slug it out until a left hand stumbles him. Phillips follows up with some more huge punches, drops him with another big left on the point of the chin and pounds him out.

Final result: Phillips def. Amedovski by TKO (punches)


185 lbs.: Alessio Di Chirico vs. Makhmud Muradov

Round 1: Muradov circling early. 3-2 misses. Di Chirico low kick. Muradov with a right around the guard. Another right a minute in. Right hand to the body, glancing head kick on the break. Two minutes in. Di Chirico with a counter right. Muradov low-high 1-2. Teep to the body. Trying to jab. Two minutes to go.

Muradov tries an overhand, blocked. Di Chirico with a hard flurry. Counter right. Fake level change. One minute to go. Muradov with a straight left, denies a single-leg. Head kick attempt. Di Chirico with some counters. Muradov tries a flying knee and takes him down. 10-9 Muradov.

Round 2: Muradov working behind the jab. Di Chirico tries a head kick. One minute in. Muradov tries a 1-2. Di Chirico left hook. Muradov 1-2. Combination falls short. Two minutes in. 3-2 from Naurdiev. Low kicks, glancing head kick and right hand. Switch kick to the body, then an orthodox one that seems to hurt Bahadurzada. Naurdiev tries a jump knee with a minute to go. Low kick from Naurdiev. 10-9 Naurdiev.

Round 2: Bahadurzada trying to throw more in the early going. Naurdiev digs a body shot a minute in. Low kick, jab, body kick. Bahadurzada wading forward, throwing wide bombs. Hard lead right lands for Naurdiev. Two minutes in. Bahadurzada lands a left hook. He’s winging haymakers, not landing clean. Naurdiev hits a blast double and moves right to side control. Chikadze manages to sweep into guard, lands some hard punches and elbows. Big hammerfists. One minute to go. More punches and elbows. Back to the feet. Davis gets on on a double-leg, brings him down against the fence. 10-9 Chikadze.

Round 2: Jab and overhand land for Chikadze. Right hand exchange. Jab knocks Davis back a minute in, then another. Cross counter by Davis. He shoots from too far out, denied. Chikadze with a hard body kick. Two minutes in. Davis cross counter, eats more jabs. Lead right connects for him. More Chikadze jabs, Davis answers with calf kicks. Two minutes to go.

Chikadze lands a heavy left hook in combination and David waves him on. Lead left stings Davis. One minute to go. Davis shoots, puts him on his back with a minute to go. Low mount on the fence. Chikadze works his way up, lands a body kick and tries a flying knee. 10-9 Chikadze.

Round 3: They trade in the center to start. Leg kick exchange, Chikadze landing more. One minute in. Right hand from Chikadze. Davis pops him with a jab. Straight left comes back at him. Davis looks for a takedown, can’t get it. He shoots again, lands a knee to the body before they separate. Chikadze waves him on. Two minutes to go.

Round 1: Diakiese firing early leg kicks. Flying knee attempt, Vannata just misses with a counter right. Hard calf kick from Diakiese a minute in, then a low kick catches Vannata throwing and puts him on his back. Diakiese on top in guard. He stands over Vannata, who uses the opportunity to stand. Two minutes in. Vannata avoids the next couple low kicks, exchanges. Calf kick knocks Vannata over. Two minutes to go.

Diakiese tries a couple head kicks. Straight right connects. Vannata takes one to the nards. Counter right lands for him when they resume. Diakiese body kick, Vannata lands to the body in return. Diakiese jab knocks Vannata’s mouthpiece out. Low kicks to the thigh this time from both men. Diakiese threatens to spin. 10-9 Diakiese.

Round 2: Straight right from Diakiese. Side kick downstairs. Hard straight right, then another calf kick. Both land leg kicks. One minute in. Body kick from Vannata. Round 1: 1-2 lands for Shore. Tentative start to the fight. Shore tries a high kick, shoots, stuffed a minute in. Jab lands for Shore, then a leg kick. Hernandez pops him with a fade-back jab. Two minutes in. Shore low kick met by a jab. 1-2 lands for Shore. Good shot into the body lock, takes Hernandez to the fence. Knee to the head. He completes the takedown into half guard with two minutes to go.

Hernandez gives up his back trying to stand and Shore wraps up the body triangle. One minute to go. Good punches from Shore. Sneaky elbow. Back to the body triangle. 10-9 Shore.

Round 2: Shore lands a quick jab, tries a high kick. Hernandez just isn’t throwing enough so far. Shore just potshotting, eats an overhand right. One minute in. Hernandez tries a low kick and gets taken down for it. On to half guard. Two minutes in. Looking for mount. Got it. Hernandez manages to sweep into top position for a moment, but Shore stands with a front headlock and lands a knee. Hernandez presses him against the fence. Round 3: Shore shoots within five seconds and takes him down into guard. On to half guard, then the back a minute in. Full body triangle. Hernandez turns and Shore takes mount. Hard elbow two minutes in. Hernandez nearly turns into guard, Shore regains the body triangle and chips away with elbows and punches. He’s got the RNC and there’s the tap.
