Colby Covington continues to lose support from other members of American Top Team over his recent comments against Dustin Poirier.
Colby Covington has made quite the name for himself by being the most obnoxious heel possible. There’s all the Trump / MAGA stuff he does to own the libs, and then there’s the endless trash talk he spews at pretty much any fighter he can think of. Opponents and potential future opponents? Sure, makes sense. Retired fighters like Miesha Tate and Matt Hughes? I don’t quite get the point but whatever gets you headlines, I guess. His fellow teammates at American Top Team?
Now that just seems dumb and self-destructive.
So far he’s gotten into it with his ATT comrades Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier. We kind of wondered what other ATT members thought of the whole situation, and unsurprisingly the ones who are speaking out aren’t very cool with Colby’s behavior. Joanna Jedrzejczyk spoke with Canadian sports network The Score leading up to her strawweight main event against Michelle Waterson next week and here’s what she said:
”You shouldn’t shit in your gym,” Jedrzejczyk told theScore. “What (Covington) has done, it’s like pretty shady, you know? I really do not respect that. … I really don’t like it because we are all teammates.”
”It was really not nice because even if I really like Khabib … I need to and I want to stick to my people and support them,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I saw how hard Dustin Poirier was training before the fight. The gym is very big. … We all are different, from different cultures, different countries, we all behave differently, we all have (a) different sense of humor. But the thing is you should support your teammates, it doesn’t matter if you like them or not. We represent one team, we represent the same colors, so we should support each other as much as we can.”
Makes sense: even if you aren’t 100% on board with this or that, you put that aside and support your team. Unless, of course, someone breaks the ‘support the team’ tenet. Then you can bag on them for not supporting the team.
Can Colby reel things back in or is it only a matter of time before he’s asked to leave? It’s a question he’s been asking for at least a month now and we have to imagine things will only heat up rather than cool down. It’s definitely not a good time for him to be losing support. He’s finally got that long awaited title shot against welterweight champ Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 in December.
Fortunately, Covington is the best and Usman is just a bum so either way, Colby should be fine. Right?
