Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, was behind in his taxes over the last couple of years, on a city, state, and federal level. That doesn’t mean he was broke or couldn’t afford them, it just means they were unpaid. Probably because he’s a famous athlete who expects his handlers to … well, handle shit.
But now that Jones is caught up on his debts to Uncle Sam, he thought the mixed martial arts (MMA) community would be interested to know that he is, in fact, still filthy rich and has no problem doing his duty as an American citizen.
“Whoever wrote that article doesn’t know what they’re talking about,” Jones said on Instagram. “Financial situation is unbelievable and I’m not even trying to brag. I’ve made millions and millions of dollars this year and I’ve paid millions of dollars in taxes, which I am all caught up on.”
“I’m a proud American who pays his taxes to the city of Albuquerque and to the United States of America,” Jones continued. “Lots of taxes. I’m not sure why I’m even addressing this in public. I don’t need people walking around thinking I don’t got money and I can’t afford to pay the government. That couldn’t be farther from the truth, no need to even elaborate. And whoever’s digging into this financial thing: mind your business, don’t count my cheese.”
Jones will be making more cheese at some point in early 2020, just as soon as the promotion can decide when and where he’ll fight. As far as an opponent; well, we’ll just have to wait and see if Chris Weidman can put his money where his mouth is.
