“It would be a real shame if right now in his prime of primes, he didn’t fight for the title.”
Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan thinks it would be a “real shame” if Jorge Masvidal didn’t fight for the UFC welterweight title whilst he is in his prime.
Masvidal (35-13) has had somewhat of a career resurgence of late and been one of the breakout stars of 2019. Despite being almost fifty fights deep in his MMA career, consecutive first round KO’s against Darren Till and Ben Askren landed Masvidal a fight with Nate Diaz for the UFC’s inaugural ‘BMF’ title, which he won by doctor’s stoppage in the third round.
Talking recently on the “JRE MMA Show,” Rogan downplayed Masvidal’s interests one fights with Conor McGregor and Nick Diaz, instead saying he wants him to fight for the belt next.
“I see why he would say that but I think it would be a real shame if right now in his prime of primes, he didn’t fight for the title,” Rogan said. “I just feel like he’s so close. He’s huge right now.” (Transcription via BJ Penn)
Current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will aim to defend his belt at UFC 245 next weekend, December 14th, against former interim champ Colby Covington. Impressed by the redirection he has recently experienced, Rogan wants Masvidal to fight the winner of that fight.
“I wanna see first no matter what Colby and Usman. Once that’s done, I want Masvidal to fight for the title whoever’s got the belt. I think if Masvidal and Nick Diaz don’t fight on the undercard, I don’t even know if they actually made that. I have no idea. If they do make that fight happen, I mean of course I’m gonna be excited to see it. Of course, but my thoughts are that right now we’re experiencing Masvidal in this very strange zone where you see fighters enter into it whether it’s through this re-dedication or refocusing of his intent and his discipline.”
