UFC welterweight Donald Cerrone has a pretty busy 2020 ahead of him.
In addition to his UFC 246 main event slot against Conor McGregor later this month in Las Vegas, “Cowboy” will appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke in Spenser: Confidential on Netflix, which is part of the “Spenser” universe made popular in both crime novels and on television.
And since Spenser: For Hire was a big part of my late 80’s action lineup, which also included Hunter and Jake & The Fatman, I will continue to look down my nose at this latest attempt to capitalize on the lingering juice from an existing franchise.
From the Netflix Twitter account:
SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL: Mark Wahlberg reteams with director Peter Berg to play an ex-cop, Spenser, who moves in with Hawk (Winston Duke), an aspiring MMA fighter with his own rap sheet. Between gym rounds, the duo’s taunts turn to trust, and they team up to solve a double homicide.
Nothing groundbreaking here but I’ll probably watch it anyway.
Berg directed Wahlberg in Mile 22, among other things, which also starred former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey. No word yet on what part Cerrone is expected to play but no doubt it includes something related to MMA.
A win over McGregor would also go a long way in promoting the upcoming show, slated for a March 6 premiere. Spenser: Confidential also stars Post Malone, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger, Bokeem Woodbine, and Cassie Ventura.
