People on the street in Dublin were asked about the return of Conor McGregor.
MMA Fighting’s Petsey Carroll took the streets in Dublin recently to ask people on the street how they felt about the Octagon return of ‘the Notorious’ Conor McGregor.
Conor McGregor has not fought in the UFC since his loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October, 2018. He hasn’t won a sanctioned fight since UFC 205 in November, 2016; when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight crown.
The bout with Nurmogomedov was stained with the scenes that preceded and followed the Dagestani’s victory. The lead-up to the fight featured some of the most bitter back-and-forths we’ve ever seen in mixed martial arts, all stemming from an incident that saw McGregor launch a dolly through the window of a bus carrying Nurmagomedov and other fighters.
After the fight, chaos broke out inside the T-Mobile Arena with McGregor and Nurmagomedov brawling with each other’s camps. That inspired similar scenes with both men’s sets of fans.
In the 14 months since that debacle, McGregor has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Last year he plead guilty to assaulting a man in a Dublin pub over a dispute involving his Proper 12 whiskey brand. Last year McGregor also settled out of court with an individual who accused the fighter of destroying his cellphone after he asked the star for a picture.
Running parallel to these incidents is the troubling news, reported by The New York Times, that McGregor has been the subject of two separate sexual assault investigations in Dublin.
With all this controversy swirling around McGregor, how do people on the street in Ireland feel about their former champion and his return to action — against Donald Cerrone — at this weekend’s UFC 246?
