Heavyweight contenders take center stage inside PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., this Saturday (Jan. 25, 2020) in UFC Fight Night 166’s ESPN+-streamed main event, featuring wrestling standout Curtis Blaydes against former champion Junior dos Santos. Earlier in the evening, Michael Chiesa attempts to continue his Welterweight run against fellow Lightweight convert Rafael dos Anjos, while Flyweight contender Alex Perez squares off with “Contender Series” veteran Jordan Espinosa.

We played it safe last week, but let’s see if we can’t get ourselves a big win to start the year off properly.

What Went Wrong at UFC 246?

Absolutely fooking nothing! The card was as volatile as expected, but Holly Holm and Diego Ferreira performed up to expectations.

UFC Fight Night 166 Odds For The Undercard:

Bevon Lewis (-450) vs. Dequan Townsend (+360)
Arnold Allen (-300) vs. Nik Lentz (+240)
Lucie Pudilova (-175) vs. Justine Kish (+155)
Montel Jackson (-630) vs. Felipe Colares (+465)
Tony Gravely (-120) vs. Brett Johns (EVEN)
Nate Landwehr (-125) vs. Herbert Burns (+105)
Sara McMann (-155) vs. Lina Lansberg (+135)

Thoughts: Herbert Burns is this week’s underdog of choice, though you can also squeeze a bit of value out of Sara McMann.

Landwehr is ludicrously relentless and packs some heat in his right hand, but his devil-may-care offense presents far too many openings for a submission ace of Burns’ caliber. Whether through a reactive takedown or a clean shot on “The Train’s” wide-open chin, Burns will inevitably find himself on top, and though Landwehr is generally good at scrambling to his feet, shaking Burns off looks to be a bridge too far.

He may not be the monster his brother is, but “The Blaze” is worth an investment.

“Why on Earth would you recommend a bet on Sara McMann?” you might ask. She’s among the mentally weakest fighters in the sport, giving up whenever she’s caught in a submission. My answer would be that Lansberg has never scored a submission as a professional and got rag-dolled recently by Yana Kunitskaya, a lesser wrestler than McMann. Don’t go crazy on this bet, as McMann can and will disappoint you, but parlaying her with Bevon Lewis gives positive odds. I say go for it.

UFC Fight Night 166 Odds For The Main Card:

Curtis Blaydes (-240) vs. Junior Dos Santos (+200)
Rafael dos Anjos (-265) vs. Michael Chiesa (+225)
Alex Perez (-275) vs. Jordan Espinosa (+235)
Angela Hill (-160) vs. Hannah Cifers (+140)
Jamahal Hill (-135) vs. Darko Stosic (+115)

Thoughts: Curtis Blaydes and Angela Hill, come on down.

I’ve been a Junior dos Santos mark since he floored Gilbert Yvel in the first mixed martial arts (MMA) event I ever watched, UFC 108. As fond as I am of him, I recognize that his chin has badly deteriorated and that he still can’t really deal with pressure. Blaydes has the gas tank to recreate Cain Velasquez’s brutal efforts and only Francis Ngannou has managed to crack his chin, making an early dos Santos knockout a remote possibility. If Blaydes wins, we get money. If he loses, one of my favorite fighters gets a much-needed win.

It sounds like a bargain.

Hannah Cifers is a decent fighter, but there’s a world of difference between beating Jodie Esquibel and beating Hill. Though “Overkill” never developed into an elite fighter, she’s beaten more dangerous strikers than “Shockwave” and will have advantages in height and reach. In short, Hill seems like a safe investment.
