Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, will make his return to the Octagon for yet another 205-pound title defense, this time against undefeated challenger and former collegiate athlete, Dominick Reyes. Their five-round pay-per-view (PPV) headliner tops the UFC 247 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, co-anchored by the women’s flyweight title fighting pitting current champion, Valentina Shevchenko, opposite surging 125-pound contender, Kaitlyn Chookagian. Remember, UFC 247 requires a subscription to ESPN+ to watch (sign up here). The “Prelims” undercard will be televised on ESPN, along with early “Prelims” offerings also making their way to the ESPN+ and Fight Pass digital networks. The action takes place this TONIGHT (Sat., Feb. 8, 2020) inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, with heavyweight fan favorites Derrick Lewis and Ilir Latifi also getting their hands dirty in “The Lone Star State.”

Round 1: Chookagian with her usual bounce. Chookagian low kicks, Shevchenko jab. One minute in. Counter left by Shevchenko. She eats a low kick, comes back with a spinning back fist. Two minutes in. 1-2-leg kick. Another low kick. Chookagian tries a Brazilian kick, avoids one in return. Two minutes to go.

Chookagian body kick. Shevchenko catches a body kick and sweeps the other foot out to land on top in guard. Chipping shots from Shevchenko, nasty elbow in the waning seconds. 10-9 Shevchenko.

Round 2: Chookagian looking to lean on her kicks. Body kick from Shevchenko in return. Spinning back kick connects. Chookagian tries to spin in return a minute in. 265 lbs.: Juan Adams vs. Justin Tafa

Round 1: Adams patiently advancing. They trade body kick attempts. 1-2 from Adams. One minute in. Tafa low kick. Right hand dings Adams, not helped by a pair of left hooks soon after. Both land low kicks. Big looping right hurts Adams and Tafa follows up with a vicious uppercut. Adams bounces in and out of consciousness from the next series of shots, forcing the ref into action.

Final result: Tafa def. Adams by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Mirsad Bektic vs. Dan Ige

Round 1: Ige with a double jab, lands a hard left hook soon after. Bektic shoots, Ige answers with a knee tap but can’t establish. Ige chopping right. One minute in. They tie up, Ige ending up on top after Bektic slips throwing a knee. Huge punches by Ige as Bektic stands, but Bektic comes back with a good shot as they separate. Good exchange and Bektic appears to get stung. Two minutes in. Ige lands on the break. Body shots land for him and he puts Bektic on the fence. Body shots land and he stuffs a takedown. Two minutes to go.

Ige lands again on the break. 1-2 from Ige, left hook comes back at him. Bektic shoots, stuffed. One minute to go. Ige shoots in behind some punches, puts him on the fence. They separate. Bektic tries a spinning elbow. 10-9 Ige.

Round 2: Good exchanges in the early going. Bektic looking more aggressive, fires a well-timed double-leg and survives a sweep attempt to land on top in side control. One minute in. Knees to the body from Bektic. Ige attempts to stand, uses the cage to aid his effort and avoids a back take. Bektic shoots back in, looking for a single-leg. He ends up on top in half guard. Now looking for an arm triangle on the opposite side. Two minutes to go.

Bektic makes an excellent pass from half guard to mount, putting on the squeeze. One minute to go. Bektic abandons the choke, gets stuck back in half guard. Ige looks for a kimura, loses it, regains guard. 10-9 Bektic.

Round 3: Ige on the front foot to start. Good lead right. Body kick lands. They trade in the center a minute in. Bektic shoots behind a 1-2, stuffed. Ige landing elbows as he defends. Two minutes in. Ref separates them. 1-2 from Ige, denies a takedown. 1-1-2 by Bektic, hard right from Ige. They trade at close range. Two minutes to go.

Ige lands a sweeping right and a body kick. Bektic gets in deep on a single-leg, avoids an armbar as he ends up on top in half guard. Full guard. Ige sweeps his way up, Bektic looks for the back. Ige makes a nice roll but gets stuck in the front headlock. Looking for the back, has to fight off a heel hook. Damn close. 10-9 Ige.

265 lbs.: Ilir Latifi vs. Derrick Lewis

Round 1: Tentative start, not surprisingly. Latifi ducks a right hand, eats a knee. They separate, Latifi complaining of an eye poke. Lewis cracks him with a flying knee, but Latifi ties up. Two minutes in. Latifi looks for a single-leg. can’t get it, keeps him on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Ref separates them. Lewis looks for a switch head kick. Another one, blocked, wild exchange. Latifi ties up again. One minute to go. Latifi can’t get the takedown. They separate late. Lewis tries a knee, gets clinched. 10-9 Lewis.

Round 2: Lewis looks for a head kick again, blocked. Leg kick from Latifi. Again. Technical issues obscure the next minute; Latifi pressing him against the fence two minutes. Latifi gets the takedown he wanted and lands on top in half guard. Two minutes to go.

Latifi ends the round on top, taking Lewis down again in the meantime. 10-9 Latifi.

Round 3: Lewis tries a chopping right, blocked. 1-2 lands. Another flying knee attempt, which Latifi uses to get a body lock and put him on the fence. Latifi changes levels and takes him down into half guard. Chipping away with short ground-and-pound. Lewis works his way to his feet with two minutes to go.

Another flying knee attempt and some big swings. Latifi grabs double underhooks. Knee from Lewis, stuck against the fence. Latifi takes him down but can’t establish. Again he ties up after avoiding a big right. One minute to go. Lewis swinging heavy leather. Latifi puts him on the fence again. 185 lbs.: Trevin Giles vs. James Krause

Round 1: Krause on the front foot to start, caught by a 1-2. sharp jab catches Krause kicking. Krause slips a combo and lands a counter right. Overhand right into a takedown and he looks for the back against the fence. One minute in. Full back control. He’s looking for the choke, brings it to the mat. Giles hand fighting well. Two minutes in. Still hunting for it;. Two minutes to go.

Krause appears to get it under the chin, only for Giles to turn into him and relieve the pressure. Now he spins into guard with a minute to go. Krause looks for a takedown, gets blasted by an elbow on the way up. Giles presses him against the fence. 10-9 Krause.

Round 2: Krause switching stance, blocks a head kick. Body kick from Krause. One minute in. Krause low kick, avoids an uppercut. Giles throwing some heavy shots. Body kick connects. Good left from Giles and he looks to unload on the fence. Krause reverses briefly and looks to counter after separating two minutes in. 1-2-3 from Giles in the center. Body shot. Two minutes to go.

Krause shoots, denied. Giles follows him down into half butterfly guard. Krause can’t get the sweep, tries to bring his legs up. One minute to go. Giles landing punches from Guard. Krause tries an armbar, eats more shots. Krause trying to stand but continues eating punches. Giles takes his back and wraps up the RNC, but the bell saves Krause. 10-9 Giles.

Round 3: Krause pressing forward still. Low kicks land. Big lead right that Giles laughs off. another right and leg kick. One minute in. Another lead right by Krause. Low kick, another lead right. 125 lbs.: Andrea Lee vs. Lauren Murphy

Round 1: Lee sending out some early kicks. Body kick connects and they trade lefts. Lee landing jabs, connecting to the body and lead leg with her kicks. One minute in. Lee continuing to target the body, lands a right cross upstairs. More body shots and counters, heavy elbow inside. Both women have lost their mouthpiece by this point. Murphy looking to throw with her, but eating heaps of body shots and a nice left hook. Two minutes in. Leg kick, body knee. Trading punches inside. Murphy answers a body kick with a right hand. Lee tries a head kick. Two minutes to go.

More trading at close range. Lee tries to spin. Counter right by Murphy. Lee body kick and low kick. Counter left from Lee. Murphy with a pair of nice counter lefts with a minute to go. Lee steps in with an uppercut and body kick, avoiding a Superman punch. Murphy ties up and Lee slings her to her knees, only to get taken down against the fence. Lee stands before the bell. 10-9 Lee.

Round 2: Both looking for punches in the early going. Low kick from Lee. Right hand from Murphy in the center. Jab exchange. Combination by Lee a minute in. She eats a body shot, lands a left hook. Body kick from Lee, left hook downstairs as they briefly tie up. She tries to spin. They clinch, knee from Murphy on the break. Two minutes in. Lee lands a jab and body kick. 1-2-3. Body shots. 1-2 and she stops a takedown, separating before Murphy can put her on the fence. Good counter right by Murphy as they exchange. Two minutes to go.

Lee follows up a body shot with a head kick attempt. Trading punches at close range. Murphy hauls her to the fence. They separate with a minute to go. Murphy lands a jab and they go back to their steady exchanges. Back to the body goes Lee. 2-1. Murphy hits a double-leg in the waning seconds. 10-9 Lee.

Round 3: Lee just seems to have the bigger arsenal; Murphy is doing well in close-range exchanges, but Lee’s body and low kicks are dictating things at a distance. Out goes Lee’s mouthpiece again. Murphy slips on a flying knee and Lee clamps down on her neck, setting up an anaconda choke. Murphy defending so far. She drives her back to the fence and takes her down into guard. She’s unable to do much before Lee kicks her way to her feet. Good jabs and 1-2 from Lee. Two minutes to go.

Lee spins, lands a body kick. Knee from Murphy as she’s shoved away. Lee looks for a double-leg, sprawled on. Murphy lands a knee and puts her on the fence. One minute to go. Lee reverses and lands some knees of her own before separating. 3-2-body shot by Lee. 10-9 Lee.

Final result: Murphy def. Lee by split decision


170 lbs.: Alex Morono vs. Kalinn Williams

Round 1: They trade in the center to start and Williams badly hurts him with a left hook. Morono stumbles back under fire, and just when it seems like things will slow down against the fence, Williams crumples him with an uppercut and slams home right hands for the finish.

Final result: Williams def. Morono by TKO (punches)


135 lbs.: Mario Bautista vs. Miles Johns

Round 1: Slow start to the round. Two minutes in. Bautista tries a head kick. Johns lands a jab. Two minutes to go.

Leg kick from Johns. Overhand right around the guard knocks Bautista over. Bautista comes back with a flying knee attempt. One minute to go. Short right lands for Johns again and Bautista again tries to answer with a flying knee. 10-9 Johns.

Round 2: Early trade in the center. Low kick from Johns. 1-3. He looks for counters. One minute in. Bautista tries a head kick. He once again looks for the flying knee and it finally works, splitting Johns’ guard and sending him to his back. Bautista unleashes hammerfists until the ref steps in.

Final result: Bautista def. Johns by TKO (flying knee and punches)


135 lbs.: Journey Newson vs. Domingo Pilarte

Round 1: Pilarte opens with a head kick and a knee downstairs. Pilarte looking good early, but Newson uncorks a massive right hand with his back on the fence that goes over Pilarte’s left cross and just destroys him. A few more shots on the ground and it’s over.

Final result: Newson def. Pilarte by TKO (punches)


135 lbs.: Andre Ewell vs. Jonathan Martinez

Round 1: They start the fight patiently trading in the center. Martinez looking for body kicks. Both attempt head kicks. Ewell to the body a minute in. Martinez catches a body kick, can’t use it. Ewell puts another straight in Martinez’s midsection. Body kick appears to hurt Ewell and Martinez advancing, firing more kicks. Counter right knocks Martinez off-balance and Ewell follows up with a combo two minutes in. Another body shot by Ewell, now standing southpaw. More lefts downstairs. Martinezs comes back with a knee. Glancing front kick upstairs. Two minutes to go.

Martinez answers another body shot with a takedown attempt. Martinez with some knees downstairs. One minute to go. Ewell finally manages to get away with 15 seconds to go and starts unloading. Martinez answers and they end the round trading bombs. 10-9 Martinez.

Round 2: Martinez looking for low kicks, answers a body shot with a knee. Two-piece from Ewell. Martinez jabs, Ewell body shots. Another combination downstairs. One minute in. Step-in knees. Triple left hand upstairs. Another knee as he circles. Flying knee this time, more knees upstairs. Martinez with a counter left hook. Ewell lead left and he stuffs a takedown. Two minutes in. Martinez tries a head kick. Ewell goes low-high. Martinez with body and low kicks, then lands counters in the center. Two minutes to go.

Nice exchanges. Ewell catches him shooting with a knee, continues to attack the body. Martinez leg kicks. Ewell ducks a head kick, lands again to the body. One minute to go. Martinez lands a front kick downstairs, then hurts him with the same shot again. Martinez advancing, lands a leg kick and punches against the fence. Jab and low kick drop Ewell. 10-9 Ewell still.

Round 3: Ewell switching stance early, lands another left downstairs. Weird sort of standing hammerfist with his right hand. Announcers think it’s broken. One minute in. Both firing kicks. Martinez tries to go high. More front kicks to the body. Lead right hook. Two minutes in. Ewell lands a 1-2 to the body. Two minutes to go.

Low kick from Martinez. Ewell looks for left hands. Flying knee attempt. Ewell answers a pair of low kicks with a combination. One minute to go. Knee lands for Martinez, then a leg kick. Another leg kick. Ewell lands a combo and they end the round slugging. 10-9 Martinez.

145 lbs.: Austin Lingo vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1: Zalal opens with a front kick. Lingo on the front foot early, lands a series of left hooks and ties up on the fence. Zalal separates and lands a low leg kick, followed by a high kick. He changes levels for a single-leg, can’t get it a minute in. Lingo reverses on the fence. They separate. Counter right from Zalal met by a straight from Lingo. Zalal circling well, pops him with a jab and avoids an overhand. Two minutes in. Zalal ties up, can’t establish the takedown and lands knees from the front headlock. Separation. Lingo still marching forward, eating jabs as he does. Zalal shoots again and takes him to the fence. Lingo reverses, tries an elbow on the break. Two minutes to go.

More clean jabs from Zalal, then a lead right. Check hook and knee, caught by a left hook on the fence. Lingo cracks him with another left hook on the fence. Counter right. One minute to go. Low kick from Zalal. Good reactive single-leg in center cage, sets up in guard. Lingo kicks him away and looks for his own takedown. Zalal gets taken down looking for a kimura. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 2: Lingo pressing forward with greater urgency, has to fight off a single-leg. Zalal puts him on his rear against the fence. One minute in. Full guard for Zalal. Two minutes in. Zalal postures up for a shot, then looks for a d’arce when Lingo sits up. He loses it, wraps it back up as Lingo stands.

Zalal pulls guard on the choke, but loses it and they stand. Head kick and low kick land for him. Lingo struggling to cut off the cage and gets taken down once again with a minute to go. Weak-looking guillotine attempt goes nowhere. Zalal lands on the way up. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 3: Lingo just cannot corral Zalal. Fake takedown from Zalal into a knee and punch. Body kick and low kick from Zalal. One minute in. Lingo backs him to the fence, can’t capitalize. Zalal responds by running the pipe with a single-leg and taking side control. Lingo rolls to his knees, attempts to roll away but ends up stuck in guard again two minutes in. Elbows from Zalal. Lingo scrambles up, caught in the front headlock. Two minutes to go.

Zalal snaps him down and hunts for an anaconda choke. He abandons it, goes back to the front headlock, then separates. Lingo in pursuit once again. He lands a body shot and puts Zalal on the fence. One minute to go. Zalal tries a throw, can’t get it. Another reactive single-leg from Zalal, back to the front headlock. He looks for an arm-in guillotine, can’t get it, locks up a deeper d’arce.
