Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he barely trained for his boxing match against Conor McGregor in 2017.

At 40 years of age, Floyd Mayweather came out of retirement in 2017 to fight UFC star Conor McGregor in a 12-round boxing match. As expected by many, the undefeated boxer came out victorious via tenth round TKO.

With the “hard work, dedication” mantra of “The Money Team,” it was also expected for Floyd Jr. to dedicate himself to training. But according to the man himself, he took things a little lighter in preparation for McGregor, who was the least experienced boxer he’s faced since the start of his career.

“For the Conor McGregor [fight], I didn’t really train,” Mayweather said on the Drink Champs podcast (transcript by Boxing Junkie). “All I did was do pushups and sit-ups. That’s all I did. Pushups and sit-ups, box a few times, hit the bag a few times, because, actually, training camp was in different places. I would do training camp in Vegas a few days, [but] sometimes I wouldn’t go to the gym for a week.

“I took it serious, like I said before, I wanted to have some fun in the fight and I wanted to entertain the people.”

After the McGregor bout, Mayweather once again stepped inside the boxing ring on New Year’s Eve in 2018 to face Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition match at Rizin FF 14. He ended the bout via first-round TKO after scoring three knockdowns.
