Roxanne Modafferi would really, really appreciate it if her opponent’s stopped missing weight.
Fun fact, in her six fights since returning to the UFC, Roxanne Modafferi has only lost to one opponent who missed weight.
Modafferi is 3-3 since returning to the UFC, trading wins-and-losses all the way back to her UFC women’s flyweight title fight against Nicco Montano in Dec. 2017. In her last four fights, Modafferi beat Maycee Barber, lost to Jennifer Maia — who missed weight by four pounds — beat Antonina Shevchenko and lost to Sijara Eubanks — who missed weight by 2.2 pounds.
“I’m looking at the top 10. Four people out of the top 10 have missed weight,” Modafferi told Bloody Elbow. “I really don’t want to fight another fighter who has missed weight, so ladies get your act together. I’m not going to fight you. But I don’t have all the time in the world. Please make weight.”
“I don’t want to fight Maia because she missed weight and I’m pissed off,” she continued before noting, “She apologized, by the way. She is the only one of four people who missed weight to have ever apologized to me. So thank you for that.”
A contentious point of debate among females fighting is how a woman’s natural cycle can effect her weight cutting. As far as Modafferi is concerned, that is no excuse.
“You know it’s going to happen and even if it comes early, you should be close enough to your weight that you should be able to suck it up and lose more weight. If you’re right on the edge of your weight category and your period is going to throw you off, you should move up a weight class because that isn’t healthy. You shouldn’t have to kill yourself to make weight,” she asserted. “Go up a weight class if you can’t handle it. I can make weight, so make weight.”
When it comes to what is next for the no. 5 ranked flyweight, Modafferi is superstitious.
“It seems like every time I call somebody out, just to call somebody out, I never get that fight. So I don’t even want to know that. I wonder if they’ll put me against the winner of Lauren Murphy and Andrea Lee,” she shared. “Except I don’t want to fight Jojo, she’s my teammate.”
Modafferi is coming off a unanimous decision win over Maycee Barber at UFC 246.
