Apparently Wednesday’s press conference for Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury 2 was too much for the Nevada Athletic Commission to handle.
The build-up to Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury 2 was largely incident free… that is, until Wednesday’s press conference.
In addition to the standard war of words, things got physical during the faceoff as they exchanged two-handed shoves, and they kept jawing at each other after they were separated. Security had to rush onto the stage to restore order.
This is hardly the first time this has happened in boxing history, let alone with an entourage also on stage. Hell, we’ve often seen this sort of circus occur in the state of Nevada!
Well in a surprising decision, the Nevada Athletic Commission has pulled the plug on a Wilder vs. Fury 2 staredown at Friday’s weigh-in. ESPN’s Dan Rafael broke the news on Thursday.
“In my 25 years in boxing I’ve never heard of an administrative body stepping in and prohibiting a faceoff,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “It’s the pinnacle moment before the fight. I am just shocked.”
This seems like an extreme response to what transpired on Wednesday, but I guess they will have a faceoff when they’re physically in the ring on Saturday night for their highly anticipated heavyweight championship rematch.
