A big knockout win by Roman Gonzalez over Kal Yafai to become WBA super-flyweight champion.
“Chocolatito” is back.
Roman Gonzalez (49-2, 41 KOs) is a world champion once again, having thoroughly vanquished WBA titleholder Kal Yafai (26-1, 15 KOs) in the co-main event of Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing on DAZN tripleheader in Frisco, TX. The Nicaraguan scored a knockdown in round eight, then finished the job with a sensational right hand shot that ended the fight.
Gonzalez was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage, working the Brit over with his trademark volume punching and outstanding combinations. Yafai had no answers for the left hooks to the body or the uppercuts on the inside, and the decision to go toe-to-toe and trade with the great “Chocolatito” proved a poor one by Yafai.

Considering Gonzalez was written off after the big KO loss in his rematch vs. Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, followed by knee problems (and surgery) and general inactivity, this was a terrific showing that silences the doubters of this all-time great. He did win by KO in two tune-up fights beforehand, but he was an underdog to Yafai and gave Kal a boxing masterclass.
A world champion in four weight classes, Gonzalez has firmly established himself as still belonging in the discussion of the elite in the sport.
