It’s been a crazy 24 hours for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the world’s preeminent mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion has locked in a new main event for the UFC 249 pay-per-view (PPV) fight card on April 18.

Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje.

The battle of top-ranked lightweight contenders will be for the promotion’s interim 155-pound strap and the winner is expected to face reigning division kingpin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, at some point in September.

Assuming the coronavirus hasn’t wiped out the population by then.

“Tony, I gotta give it to him. He took it well, he took it really well,” UFC President Dana White told ESPN. “It’s tough when you’re ready to get that fight that you’ve been waiting for, for so long, and it falls out, and I know everybody is going crazy on Khabib, Khabib didn’t do anything wrong.”

Tell that to the fans.

No venue has been revealed for UFC 249 as of the writing, but it’s expected to take place somewhere on the west coast. The promotion will eventually move to a private island while the world remains under quarantine.
