Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson 1 was a Main Event UFC Light Heavyweight Championship Bout for UFC 165 back in September, 2013. A fight worthy of its induction into the UFC Hall of Fame, Jones and Gus waged war for five thrilling rounds and ended in a controversial decision that’s still discussed to this day. Our Champion, Jones, was a huge favorite and our Challenger, Gustafsson, a massive underdog. They had an epic battle; Jones winning via Unanimous Decision with the judges scorecards coming in at 48/47, 48/47 and 49/46 . The results didn’t stop Gustafsson from being terribly proud of his performance and wanting an immediate rematch.
Stockton bad boy Nick Diaz vs. Takanori ‘The Fireball Kid’ Gomi was a Main Card bout at PRIDE 33: The Second Coming, back in February of 2007, that ended in a no contest — after having ended in a fantastic sub. Diaz was a moderate underdog and Gomi was a moderate favorite. As one of the “last great fights put on by the teetering Pride organization, it stands as an all-time MMA Classic.” The bout started off with wild punching exchanges, a hard shot to Diaz’ eye, Gomi punching himself into having arms like dead weight; and in the 2nd Gomi landed a crushing right to Diaz’ eye, opening a gash that almost resulted in a Doctor’s stoppage. But Diaz locked in a Gogoplata at the 1:46 mark after the restart – submitting the exhausted Gomi. Alas, ultimately Diaz tested positive for extremely high blood THC concentrations following the bout and had the win stripped from his record.
