UFC president Dana White shares a bunch of new information on his proposed “Fight Island”.
UFC president Dana White did an Instagram Live chat with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto today, and he dropped a ton of news about the near future of the UFC.
The promotion will be holding three cards in a week, on May 9th, 13th, and 16th. And a card on the 23rd is likely, but not finalized. White was coy about where the fights were actually taking place, but a UFC press release that came out minutes later confirmed that they will go down in Jacksonville, Florida.
But perhaps the most fun news that came out of the chat was White sharing more details of his proposed “Fight Island” for international fighters to compete on.
Dana had said before the Fight Island would be good to go in late May in his last update. He has revised that to June now, but said it’s still a go. And that the Octagon will actually be on the beach. Seriously.
“Fight Island should be up and running in June. So I should be able to start running international events in June. From May 9 to May 23, we’ll knock out four shows. And then in June we can start international stuff on the island.
“We really are putting an Octagon on the beach,” White said. “There’s going to be training facilities there for people. There are hotels. And the whole island is going to be built, all the infrastructure is going to be built for the UFC to come do fights there.”
So, it certainly appears that the UFC will be back in full swing very soon. And the Octagon could have some sand in it come summer time.
