We will be closing out our sweet-sixteen round in the blue corner today for our BE’s BADDEST Tournament Series to figure out what is the single Greatest MMA Fight Of All Time—that one bout to watch before the world ends. Today we have the #6 ranked, Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero 2, locking horns with the #4 seed, Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar.
In our last tournament matchup, the red corner witnessed #3 Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Johnson in an exciting tie-breaker round with #5 Cub Swanson vs. Doo Ho Choi. Their first fight resulted in a 16-16 draw, but this time Swanson vs. Choi posted up 18 votes to Gaethje vs. Johnson’s 16. This means the featherweights now advances to the final four to face #2 Mark Hunt vs. Bigfoot Silva 1.
Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero 2 was for the UFC middleweight belt, well at least it was for Whittaker who actually made the weight. This wild war went down at UFC 225 on June 9, 2018. Whittaker and Romero went the distance for a second time, with both men having moments of hurting the other. The judges were split with their decisions, with Whittaker ultimately walking away with the nod.
Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar 1 was the iconic fight that launched the UFC into the mainstream vein, and also the bout that quite frankly saved the promotion from going under. Griffin vs. Bonnar was a tremendous back and forth battle full of brawling exchanges, heart and courage, and it pretty much left everything in the Octagon soaked in blood by the time it was all said and done. It was the finale to the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, and was available for free on Spike TV. At a time when the UFC needed it to the most, this was the fight that got the world’s attention.
