Earlier reports stated that Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in critical condition.
After being placed in a medically induced coma and undergoing open heart surgery, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov has reportedly regained consciousness.
The father and longtime coach of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was flown from his native Dagestan to a military hospital in Moscow last week following complications due pneumonia. As his health took a turn for the worse, the renowned coach was placed in a medically induced coma.
By Thursday, new reports emerged that indicated the 57-year-old had woken up from the coma following heart surgery. His condition remains critical.
Both Conor McGregor and UFC President Dana White released separate statements acknowledging Abdulmanap’s current condition. White’s statement, which was published on UFC.com, is available below:
“Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is a true martial artist who lives a life of pride, honor and respect,” White said. “He instilled those same values in his son, world champion Khabib, at an early age and was always in his corner throughout his career. I know how close Khabib is with his father, and I’m saddened to hear about his current state. My thoughts are with Abdulmanap and the Nurmagomedov family as he continues to fight.”
Apart from being Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap is also a celebrated coach and a longtime mentor for his son and a host of other Dagestani athletes. He is considered the patriarch of the Nurmagomedov family and an essential member of the UFC’s champion’s team.
