Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov remains in critical condition after undergoing heart surgery in Moscow.
Several weeks ago, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was transported from his native Dagestan to a military hospital in Moscow after falling ill with pneumonia and flu-like symptoms. As his condition worsened, the renowned coach suffered a heart attack and underwent surgery before being placed in a medically induced coma. Now it appears that Abdulmanap’s illness was brought on by COVID-19.
According to several reports from Russian media, the father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov suffered a heart attack shortly after it was confirmed that he had contracted the 2019 novel coronavirus.
The 57-year-old, who previously underwent heart surgery in 2019, initially fell ill in his hometown of Makhachkala, Dagestan, and was convinced by family members to visit a doctor, who later diagnosed him with pneumonia. Despite medial advice and prescriptions, Abdulmanap reportedly continued to go about his routine and refused to undergo testing for coronavirus.
As Abdulmanap’s condition worsened, he was transported to a military hospital in Moscow. He then suffered a heart attack on May 3, underwent heart surgery, and was placed in a medically induced coma.
While the Nurmagomedov family patriarch has since woken up from his coma, he is reportedly still unable to speak and remains in critical condition.
The incident had a significant impact on the UFC lightweight champion, who took to social media imploring his fellow citizens to take the necessary precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many hoped that the trouble would not land on their doorstep; many still do not believe in the seriousness of the situation. However, our negligence to the advice and requests of doctors, coupled with the panic created by the people, led to a high rate of spread of the disease, exacerbating the already difficult situation,” Nurmagomedov said to his 19.8 million followers on Instagram. “The fact is our hospitals are now overcrowded with patients. There are no specialists and not enough medication or supplies, while the number of patients is only growing.
“Believe me, the disease is deadly and we already feel it ourselves. By staying at home, we can reduce the burden on doctors and hospitals, and perhaps through our cautiousness, we will save lives. Take care of your loved ones and do not let them leave the house unnecessarily.”
There are currently more than 263,00 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Russian Federation, including nearly 2,500 deaths. Despite having the fourth highest number of coronavirus cases globally, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted stay-at-home orders and announced that the country’s “non-working” period has come to an end.
