Sylvia wants the UFC to pay for an infection to the arm he broke back at UFC 48.
Way back in 2004, Tim Sylvia had his arm broken by Frank Mir during an iconic, and gruesome, submission loss at UFC 48. Now 16 years on, Sylvia is still having issues with the injury.
At first many thought the stoppage in the fight against Mir was wrong, even Sylvia himself not realizing his arm was broke.
Now having been retired from fighting for seven years, Sylvia has a nasty infection in the broken arm. You can check it out for yourself, but it’s pretty nasty.
“So my arm been giving me problems for over a year now. The screws are backing out from my arm break when I fought Frank Mir. My Dr. Contacted the UFC cause it was paid for by them the first time. Sort of under workman’s comp,” Sylvia wrote.
“The UFC says it’s not (their) problem and will not cover it. I don’t have insurance and it’s going to cost well over 10,000 dollars to get fixed. Any thoughts on what i should do?”
Despite the initial surgery for his broken arm being covered by the UFC, the former heavyweight champion Sylvia finds himself looking at a very expensive operation and not being sure how he will cover the costs. He has since set up a GoFundMe to raise money for his surgery.
The 44-year-old Sylvia (31-10, 1NC) retired from MMA in 2015 following a cancelled fight for which Sylvia weighed in at 371-pounds.
