Former UFC contender Wanderlei Silva broke a foot during an accident in his home town of Curitiba, Brazil.
Former UFC middleweight contender and PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva was involved in an accident in Brazil. While riding his bike in the streets of Curitiba, the ‘Axe Murderer’ was hit by a car and left with a broken foot and facial injuries, but nothing worse than that, luckily.
In an interview with Tribuna do Parana, Silva explained it was not the first time he was involved in such an accident. Back in 2016, the 43-year-old was also hit by a car while riding his bike in Curitiba, but at that occasion, the driver left the scene. This time around, Silva was helped by the man who hit him.
“If I didn’t have a helmet on, I could’ve died.” Silva said. “ People need to watch out while out on the streets. It’s hard to ride a bike in Curitiba. He (the driver) was very nice. He stopped and put me in his car. Other people also showed up to help.”
“We have much more cyclists in the city, but we don’t have a proper place to ride.” Silva continued. “Unfortunately, drivers don’t respect us. I was really sad with this accident. I can only ask people to be more aware while driving and please don’t use your phones, it could cost someone’s life.”
Currently on a two-fight losing skid, with losses to Quinton Jackson and Chael Sonnen, Wanderlei Silva (35-14-1-1 NC) has not won a fight since a March 2013 knockout win against Brian Stann.
A comeback boxing bout between Wanderlei and legend Mike Tyson was rumored to be in the works, according to Silva, but the accident might put those plans on hold for the near future.
