Anderson Silva says he has started cutting weight for his proposed catchweight bout with Conor McGregor.
Anderson Silva is serious about fighting Conor McGregor.
After both men mutually agreed to a catchweight bout at 176 pounds, Silva followed up by sending a video to two-time UFC opponent Chael Sonnen.
Silva tells Sonnen that he has already started cutting weight for the bout and that he is now waiting on UFC president Dana White to give him the thumbs-up.
“Hey, what’s up Chael? How are you, buddy? So I talked about my superfight with Conor, and I start to cut my weight. And for no excuse and for everybody talking about, ‘oh but Anderson don’t take the weight and blah blah blah.’ Okay, I start training and I’m ready for that. Conor ready, too. And it’s a one thing, just Dana White, I need to make this fight real. Let’s go see,” Silva said (h/t BJPenn.com).
Silva hasn’t fought since his TKO loss to Jared Cannonier at UFC 237, which saw the former middleweight champion downed with a leg kick at 4:47 of the first round. Silva, 45, is currently the oldest fighter on the UFC roster and hasn’t officially won a fight since 2017, when he beat Derek Brunson via unanimous decision in the UFC 208 co-main event.
McGregor, on the other hand, appears to be entering his athletic prime. The 31-year-old put on arguably the most impressive performance of his career when he disposed of Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds at UFC 246.
