Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, after months of being non-committal about his mixed martial arts (MMA) return, has finally agreed to a Daniel Cormier rubber match in the promotion’s Aug. 15 pay-per-view (PPV) main event.
“I don’t have a location yet, but the trilogy with those two great heavyweights will happen this summer,” UFC President Dana White told ESPN.
Cormier (22-2, 1 NC) captured the 265-pound title by stopping Miocic (19-3) at UFC 226 back in early 2018. “DC” would later cough up his crown in their UFC 241 rematch, and now looks to retire from combat sports with the belt around his waist.
A lot of that going around these days.
“This one is for all the marbles,” Cormier wrote on Twitter. “1-1, both knockouts but great fights, I can’t wait to fight this dude again! Now it’s time to work as hard as I ever trained.”
No other bouts have been finalized for the Aug. 15 fight card and there are far too many variables to speculate on a potential city or venue, but we do know for certain that Las Vegas will remain open for business following the promotion’s vacation to “Fight Island.”
Stay tuned.
