Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is just a couple of days away from kicking off its UFC on ESPN 12 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, topped by a lightweight headliner featuring top-ranked contenders Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker. The action gets underway TONIGHT (Sat., June 27, 2020) inside UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to what could be a title eliminator between “The Diamond” and “The Hangman,” 170-pound wild man Mike Perry collides with the submission-savvy Mickey Gall in a battle for welterweight bragging rights.

155 lbs.: Dustin Poirier vs. Dan Hooker

Round 1: Trading kicks to start the fight. Hooker connects with a left hook in combination. Low kicks from Hooker, straight left from Poirier a minute in. Combination by Hooker, Poirier catches a kick but can’t use it. Straight left from Poirier. Calf kick knocks Poirier off-balance. He takes a groin strike, waves off the ref. Another one to the groin and again Poirier elects to continue. Two-piece by Hooker. Poirier lands a nice body kick, gets popped by a left and lands his own soon after. Poirier gets double unders and takes him to the fence. They separate with two minutes to go.

Hooker goes low-high once again. Poirier doubles up the body kick, cracks him with a couple of right hands. Hooker ties up, rips Poirier’s body after taking an elbow. Hard knee from Hooker, body shot, gets cracked upstairs. One minute to go. Poirier tries a head kick, eats a low kick. Back to the body goes Hooker. Poirier with a body kick in return, then a counter left. Stiff jab by Hooker, caught by a shifting right hand. 10-9 Hooker.

Round 2: Hooker looks for an early body kick, lands a jab. Low kicks. Three-piece from Poirier in return, heavy punches to the head. Hooker knocks him back with a 2-3 and lands a step-in knee, which Poirier catches. Short punches form Poirier on the fence. One minute in. Poirier with some bombs on the break. Hooker bashes the body, eats some colossal hooks in return and manages to deny a shot. Poirier to the body. Low-high goes Hooker again. Two minutes in. Body kick by Poirier in response to a jab. Poirier falling short with some haymakers. 1-2 lands for him. Hooker fires a knee, follows it with a left hand. Hooker to the body. Poireir body kick in return, eats a combo with a minute to go. Poirier straight left, then another, but Hooker unleashes a lengthy combination in return and stuffs a takedown. Heavy body shots by Hooker, eats bombs to the head. Hooker tears into him with punches and knees at the bell. 10-9 Hooker.

Round 3: Body kick lands for Poirier early on. Shifting combo misses. Low kick from Hooker, eats a cuffing left in return. 1-1-2 by Poirier, then a 1-2 a minute in. Hooker low-high. Counter left by Poirier on the next combo. Big combination by Poirier in center cage. Again. Body kick by Poirier. Hooker loses his mouthpiece two minutes in. Hooker shoots and Poirier wraps up an arm-in guillotine, but just as the announcers declare that Hooker is doomed, the Aussie pops his head out. On top in guard. Poirier trying to set up a triangle. Poirier landing off of his back. Hooker chipping away with short punches. Poirier scoots to the fence and stands, eating a knee along the way with a minute to go. Crushing shots by Poirier on the exit. Straight left lands for him. Trading jabs. 10-9 Poirier.

Round 4: Body kick from Poirier. Combination by Hooker in return. Poirier still patiently pursuing. Jabs land for him. One minute in. Hooker catches a body kick and takes him down, jumping onto his back as Poirier stands. Poirier sits out and separates. Hooker shoots through a guillotine into another takedown. Poirier stands two minutes in, scores his own takedown. Hard left hands from Poirier on a turtling Hooker. Two minutes to go.

Poirier tries to jump into his back, gets too high and goes for a triangle. Now in omoplata position. One minute to go. Hooker extracts his arm, grabs the front headlock as Poirier moves to stand. Round 5: Shifting 1-2 lands for Poirier. Hooker body kick. Again. Poirier lands a straight left, fires a body kick. Hooker body blows met by a left hand a minute in. Hooker changes levels, denied. Hooker looking for the back. Poirier spins into him and they trade on the break. Another Poirier left and he denies a takedown. Another good sprawl. Hooker puts him on the fence with a minute to go. Poirier uppercut, Hooker knee. Booming right from Poirier and a huge left on the break. He grabs a high-elbow guillotine to defend the next takedown and uses it to look for the back. 170 lbs.: Mickey Gall vs. Mike Perry

Round 1: Perry comes out swinging. Advancing, switching stance. Gall looking for counters. Low kick lands for him. Straight left lands for Perry. Low kick connects. Right hook as they exchange. One minute in. Perry body kick and leg kick, still advancing. Gall lands a jab as he circles. Perry with a teep, eats a counter hook and body kick. He steps into the clinch. Gall looks for an elbow on the exit. Two minutes in. Counter right by Gall. Another clean counter right. Perry checks a low kick, eats a counter hook. Perry slings some heavy right hands. Both land rights near the fence. Cuffing hook by Gall, who slips throwing an elbow. Two minutes to go.

1-2 by Perry. Gall counters a low kick with a right cross. Perry catches a kick and shoots. High-amplitude suplex and looking for the back. One minute to go. He’s low on the back but has a hook in. He turns for an arm triangle, loses it, retains top position. He postures up for some hard punches. 10-9 Perry.

Round 2: Perry continues to press forward, tries a head kick. Body kick and flying knee attempt by Gall. Perry low kick, walks into a check hook. Hard right hook by Gall. He changes levels, can’t get it. Perry takes him to the fence with a body lock, takes him down a minute in. Gall tries a guillotine, then a crucifix neck crank, nothing doing. Perry on top in guard two minutes in. Postured punches from Perry. Gall grabs a kimura, uses it to sweep, grabs a front headlock as they stand. Unable to snap Perry down, loses the front headlock. Nasty elbow into a level change. Two minutes to go.

Perry limp-legs out of a takedown and separates.Hard straight right from Gall. Perry looking a little flat-footed with a minute to go. They trade right hands. Body kick from Perry, right hand from Gall. Perry doubles up the right hand and down goes Gall. Perry follows him down and drops two huge elbows before the bell. 10-9 Perry.

Round 3: Trading low kicks early. Good right hand from Gall. Perry with a heavy uppercut and left hook. Low kick exchange. Perry tries a jumping knee, blocks a back fist. One minute in. Gall counter jab, eats a Superman punch. Gall still throwing as he circles, eats an overhand right. Another Superman punch by Perry. Hard jab, denies a level change. Perry slams a right to the body. Gall looking exhausted two minutes in. 1-2 lands for him. Counter hooks, Perry walks through them and tries to open up on the fence. Perry grabs a body lock. Gall tries to roll for a leg, gives up mount. Half guard with two minutes to go.

Now side control, gets the crucifix. Gall gets out of fit, too tired to roll through. Full mount for Perry. One minute to go. Nasty elbows. Gall manages to get out of it, but Perry puts himself right in a triangle. He gets out and takes the back. 10-9 Perry.

Final result: Perry def. Gall by unanimous decision


265 lbs.: Maurice Greene vs. Gian Villante

Round 1: Greene sending out kicks to start. He checks a low kick, fires an elbow. More prodding kicks by the taller man. One minute in. Villante tries a combination. Teep knocks him back. Low kicks from Greene. Villante takes a heel to the groin. Two minutes in. Counter right lands for Greene. Villante body and low kicks. Head kick attempt. Greene slams a head kick into his guard. Two minutes to go.

Hard leg kick by Villante. Green with a heavy one in return, takes another. Villante body kics sting Greene. Greene tries a head kick. One minute to go. Greene fires some rights. Another Villante low kick. 10-9 Villante.

Round 2: Villante apparently having a toe issue. Greene sending out more kicks. Villante counter right just misses, eats a jab. One minute in. Greene with a hard leg kick. Combination upstairs. 1-1-2 attempt. Villante fires an overhand right. Two minutes in. Teeps from Greene. Hard low kick by Villante. More of ‘em. They trade hard right hands. Greene to the body. Low kick connects. Two minutes to go.

Greene sneaks a right around the guard, eats a leg kick. Head kick lands for Villante. Another heavy low kick. Greene sends out 1-2s. One minute to go. Greene body shot, Villante low kick. Counter left by Villante. Another heavy Villante leg kick. Greene low kicks. They trade before the bell. 10-9 Greene?

Round 3: Greene lands a knee to the body, checks a low kick, lands a jab. Straight right from Villante lands clean. Another overhand. Greene still circling him. Villante takes a finger in the eye. Low kick from Greene a minute in. He tries a Superman punch and Villante crushes him with a counter left. Villante pounding away with punches and elbows, moves to full mount. Greene regains half guard. Two minutes in. Villante looks a bit winded after trying to put Greene away. Two minutes to go.

Greene appears to just be holding on, but Villante suddenly taps out of nowhere. Looking back at the tape, it’s…an arm triangle off of his back? I’m going to call it that.

185 lbs.: Brendan Allen vs. Kyle Daukaus

Round 1: Hard body kick and straight left land for Daukaus. Hard shots exchanged in the early going. Daukaus ducks a left hook and takes him to the fence. As they jockey for position, Allen crushes Daukaus with a knee to the head, quickly taking mount. One minute in. Hard elbow, now looking for the back. Hard punches from back mount. Looking for the RNC, doesn’t have the angle two minutes in. Daukaus explodes into top position, lands a knee on the way up, and hunts his own back take. Two minutes to go.

One hook in for Daukaus against the fence. Good control. One minute to go. Allen manages to spin into top guard. Hard elbow opens a cut on Daukaus’ face. Half guard, looking for some final strikes. 10-9 Allen.

Round 2: Allen on the front foot to start the round. Daukaus cracks him with a combination. Another clean 1-2. Good shots off the back foot. 1-2-takedown, but Allen uses a guillotine to reverse into top position. Short elbows from Allen in guard. Two minutes in. Daukaus looks to stand and Allen clamps down on a guillotine, only to give up top position. Daukaus in half guard. Two minutes to go.

Daukaus postures up for some nice GnP. Allen regains guard, tries to bring up his guard as Daukas lands shots. An omoplata gets him into top guard. Daukaus’ cut is giving him issues. One minute to go. Another crunching elbow and another. Daukaus trying to stand against the fence, gets dropped by a lunging left hook right at the bell. 10-9 Allen.

Round 3: Heavy combination lands for Daukaus and he shoots. Allen looks for a guillotine on the way down, loses it. Daukaus on top in guard, dropping shots. One minute in. Side control now. Daukaus takes his back and wraps up the body triangle. Allen’s left eye has taken some major damage. Daukaus still looking for the RNC as blood streams down his face. Two minutes to go.

More control and choke pursuit. One minute to go . Chipping away with punches. Allen tries to turn into him, makes it into top position and starts blasting with punches. Daukaus retakes the back at the bell. 10-9 Daukaus.

170 lbs.: Takashi Sato vs. Jason Witt

Round 1: Low kick from Witt. Sato sending out his jab, eats a body shot, then crushes Witt with a clean 1-2. Witt tries to shoot in return and Sato pummels him with left hands until the ref steps in.

Final result: Sato def. Witt by TKO (punches)


150 lbs.: Sean Woodson vs. Julian Erosa

Round 1: Woodson advancing, switching stance. Erosa tries to spin, eats a jab and 1-2. Erosa answers a had kick with a low kick. One minute in. Counter right, then another from Woodson. Erosa lands a leg kick, eats a straight left. Hard straight left by Woodson. Two minutes in. Woodson outworking him so far. Shifting straight left, clean 1-2. Low kicks from Erosa. Lengthy combo by Woodson. Two minutes to go.

Erosa changes levels, lands a knee. Solid shots in the clinch. Woodson angles off with a straight left, takes a glancing spinning back fist and lands a 1-2. Erosa clinches, throws on the break, eats some straights with a minute to go. He lands on the fence, again eats that shifting straight. Uppercut lands for him, but he slips. Woodson lets him up. 10-9 Woodson.

Round 2: More long punches from Woodson. Erosa shoots, takes him to the fence. Good elbow on the break. One minute in. Shifting straight by Woodson and they trade on the fence. Erosa doing some solid work now. Back to the center, jabs from Woodson. Two minutes in. Left hook, combinations. Potshots connecting at range. He follows a knee with a right hand that knocks Erosa back. Erosa forces him to the fence and tries to open up. Hard body shot lands for him. Two minutes to go.

Erosa finding success when he forces Woodson to the fence. Knee form Woodson, Erosa shoots, lands his own knee. Clean body shot and 1-2. One minute to go. Kicks from Erosa, eats a straight and a stiff jab. Erosa to the body. Heavy right hand by Erosa, Woodson cracks him with a counter left in return. 10-9 Erosa.

Round 3: Trading punches in the early going. Low kicks from Erosa. Woodson tries a spinning back kick. Erosa changes levels, keeps driving, gets melted by a counter left. Woodson lands, avoids a leglock, and Erosa gets right back to pressuring. More counters from Woodson as Erosa marches forward. One minute in. Big punches from both men. Erosa shoots, gets the rear waist lock. Elbow on the break. Jab from woodson two minutes in. Erosa ducks a left hook and takes him down, then does so again when he stands. Erosa grabs a d’arce on the way up, pulls him to the mat, and forces the mat.

155 lbs.: Luis Pena vs. Khama Worthy

Round 1: Low kicks from both. Heavy body kick by Worthy. Pena low kick, Worthy body shot. Counter 1-2 from Worthy. Again. One minute in. Uppercut from Pena, straight left. Worthy digs a right to the body. Pena jab met by an overhand right. Good Worthy body kick. He blitzes, sprawls on a shot. Two minutes in. Pena looks for guard, Worthy backs off. Hard leg kick by Worthy. Two minutes to go.

Pena tries a jumping switch kick, answers a low kick with a body shot. Overhand left lands for Pena. Both send out front kicks. Lead right by Worthy. One minute to go. Worthy outworking him so far. Worthy body kick and lead right. Combination lands. 10-9 Worthy.

Round 2: Back to trading low kicks. Worthy counters a front kick with a straight right. He gets a little overeager stepping in and Pena changes levels for a takedown into side control. Knee on belly, now mount. Arm triangle is there and he tries to squeeze, loses it a minute in. Worthy gives up the back. Pena hunting for the choke. Two minutes in. Elbows from Pena.Two minutes to go.

Worthy manages to get a baseball grip and turn into guard. Pena looks for an omoplata, takes Worthy to the mat as he scrambles up. Worthy holding onto a guillotine grip on the wrong side in side control. Back to mount, then the back for Pena. Worthy sweeps into guard before the bell. 10-9 Pena.

Round 3: Pena tries a jumping switch kick. He changes levels, denied. 2-1 from Worthy. Pena 1-2 in return. Right hook, met by a body shot. Both land body shots a minute in. Worthy eats a 1-2, comes back with a counter right. Another reactive shot from Pena denied. Right hook from Pena, uppercut from Worthy. Worthy body shot, Pena uppercut. Two minutes. Worthy lands a couple of jabs. Pena takes him to the fence, loses his grip, re-shoots, and Worthy wraps up a Marcelotine, forcing the tap.

Final result: Worthy def. Pena by submission (guillotine choke)


265 lbs.: Tanner Boser vs. Philipe Lins

Round 1: Low kicks from Boser as he circles. Counter two-piece lands for the Brazilian. More leg kicks a minute in. Boser staying mobile. Lins digs a right hand to the body. Jab connects. 1-2 downstairs. Huge overhand right and Lins is hurt! Boser pours on the punches and Lins melts to the canvas, totally unconscious after two final hammerfists.

Final result: Boser def. Lins by KO (punches)


115 lbs.: Jinh Yu Frey vs. Kay Hansen

Round 1: Frey lands a low kick, denies a takedown and hurts Hansen with a pair of elbows before separating. Low kick exchange a minute in. Left hook from Frey on the counter. Another clean counter left. Two minutes in. Straight right lands for Hansen, who shoots under a left hand and takes Frey to the fence. Hansen tries a hip toss, denied. Good shots from Frey on the break. Two minutes to go.

Hansen left hook, Frey low kick. Hansen tries to catch a low kick. One minute to go. Frey tries to answer a body kick with a combination. Low kick from Frey. Hansen with a right cross. 10-9 Frey.

Round 2: Low kicks from Frey to start. One minute in. Frey fires a left hand, stuffs a takedown, Hansen shoots again and drags her down against the fence. Half guard for Hansen. Two minutes in. Short rights from Hansen. Frey looking to regain guard. Two minutes to go.

Frey tries to use butterfly hooks, Hansen threatens with a guillotine grip. She looks for mount, can’t get it, back to guard. One minute to go. Short lefts from Hansen. Looking to set up a guillotine, now some right hands. Frey sweeps to her feet, yanked right back down. 10-9 Hansen.

Round 3: More low kicks from Frey. 3-2 from Hansen, caught with a counter left. One minute in. Straight left from Frey. Low kick. Hansen shoots, denied, continues to drive, can’t get the uchi mata, uses the whizzer to step over her back into an armbar attempt. She transitions to a triangle, locks the armbar up again, and Frey ruefully taps. Lovely work.

145 lbs.: Jordan Griffin vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1: Both men come out southpaw. Low kick from Zalal, Griffin looking to blitz. Griffin continuing to pursue with combinations. Straight right by Zalal. One minute in. Zalal low kick, avoids a combo. Griffin forces him back and gets him partway down against the fence. Looking for the rear waist lock. Two minutes in. One hook in, not a great angle. Griffin jumps, can’t get the second hook in and they separate. Two minutes to go.

Griffin high kick blocked. He’s swinging big. 1-1-2-knee from Zalal and he ties up. Pressing Griffin against the fence. One minute to go. Zalal gets the body lock, denied by a whizzer. Griffin gets an underhook and reverses into his own body lock, jumping onto his back after a near-takedown. 10-9 Griffin.

Round 2: Zalal advances, sends out a head kick. Knee into the clinch. They separate. Griffin slips throwing a high kick, nearly eats a jumping knee. Calf kick from Zalal. They trade punches. Zalal follows a knee with right hands, eats a right hook in return. Zalal leans in for a straight right to the body that visibly hurts Griffin, who shoots in response. Zalal sprawls, but Griffin drives through and jumps onto his back. Both hooks in, playing backpack. Griffin loses a hook. Two minutes in. Zalal turns to face him and separates. Zalal body shot, Griffin 1-2. Combination from Zalal. He slips, ends up on the bottom in guard. Two minutes to go.

Griffin stands for some big GnP swings, then looks for the back as Zalal gets to his knees. Zalal rolls through, ends up in top position. Zalal holds onto a leg as Griffin stands. One minute to go. Controlling on the fence with over-unders. Griffin reverses Jockeying for position. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 3: Straight-uppercut from Griffin. Zalal working behind his jab. Head kick attempt. Straight right, knee, right hand, knee, level elbow. Griffin drops his hands and lets Zalal tee off. Zalal continues to open up and Griffin shoots, taking him down into side control against the fence. Zalal uses the fence to sweep, Griffin maintains, then shoots again when Zalal makes it to his feet. Two minutes to go. Zalal sprawls, back to work with combinations. Griffin head kick just misses. He shoots, gets in deep, denied against the fence. More combinations form ZAlal, clean knee. Two minutes to go.

Griffin again gets in deep on a takedown and again gets stymied by an overhook. Zalal driving for his own takedown. One minute to go. Knee lands for him on the break. Another, level elbow. One last knee. 10-9 Zalal.

Final result: Zalal def. Griffin by unanimous decision
