Mike Perry isn’t counting on his girlfriend/lone cornerman to give any advice during his fight with Mickey Gall this Saturday.
In late May, welterweight fighter Mike Perry did the unthinkable. After years of working with his coaches, “Platinum” decided to ditch them all and instead have his girlfriend Latory Gonzalez be the lone person to guide him through his career.
This exclusive arrangement will begin for Perry’s upcoming fight against Mickey Gall on Saturday’s UFC on ESPN card. The 28-year-old fighter isn’t expecting Gonzalez to do much coaching in his corner, unless it goes past the first round.
“Sit there and enjoy the show,” Perry said during Thursday’s virtual media day when asked what he expects from Gonzalez (transcript by BJPenn.com). “(Unless) it goes to the second round, no.
“Life is fighting advice. We are fighting out here every day with his COVID sh-t. Trying to deal with who is rich and who is poor. Who is black and who is white, we just keep fighting. All the scientific and the explanations written down on paper on how you should be and how fighting with this person and what you should do.
“I think I’m the one with the experience and I know how this sh-t goes,” he continued. “I just want to feel good. She’s going to be there and make me feel good and make me look good. If it even goes to the second round, it will be because I want her to have time to talk to me in the corner. I want her to give me a kiss and tell me to go get him.”
Perry is currently on a two-fight losing streak and had gone 1-3 in his last four bouts. He last competed at UFC 245 in December where he lost to Geoff Neal via first-round TKO.
