Fighters are starting to arrive in Abu Dhabi for UFC 251 and Volkanovski is sharing the unique experience of passing through multiple quarantines on the way to Fight Island.
Fight Island. It’s captured the imagination of MMA fans and casual fans alike, and past a few photos shared by UFC president Dana White we still have no idea what exactly to expect. All that will change on July 11th when UFC 251 goes down, but for now we’ll have to do with glimpses shared by fighters over fight week.
Right now, though, no one is there. Chartered flights from America and Australia have landed in Abu Dhabi, but for now everyone who has landed is being kept in quarantine at a hotel before being brought to Yas Island. Featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski and his team are video blogging the whole experience and boy oh boy does it look trippy.
Here’s part one, featuring his trip from Australia to Abu Dhabi:
And here’s part two, showing him training in the quarantine hotel surrounded by staff fully kitted out in complete PPE:
Volkanovski takes on Max Holloway in a rematch of their UFC 245 fight on December 14th, 2009, that saw the Australian former rugby player take the unanimous decison 50-45, 48-47, and 48-47 on the judges’ scorecards. If you just can’t wait to see the two tangle again on July 11th, we gotchu fam. Here’s the first fight for you to enjoy.
The first fight was so clear cut that we’re a bit shocked there was even an immediate rematch. What do you think, Maniacs? Was it just an off night for Holloway or is Volkanovski going to officially put an end to the Blessed Era?
