Now that UFC 251 has officially ushered in the “Fight Island” era, there is no slowing down for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The promotion will be right back at it this Wednesday (July 15, 2020) with another event, as UFC on ESPN 13 will feature a Featherweight showdown between Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige.
Before then, let’s take a trip down memory lane to see Kattar’s recent win against Jeremy Stephens. The two men collided in main card action at UFC 249 this past May in Jacksonville, Fla.
Known for pushing the pace, Stephens was in for a bit of a surprise with Kattar, who wasn’t about to step back an inch on his quest to impose his own will. That said, Stephens landed some hard shots on “The Boston Finisher” early, though Calvin showed his poise by absorbing and adapting.
In round two, Kattar really started to find his range, but Stephens was still quick to swing away with heavy bombs. But midway through the round, Kattar landed a perfectly-timed elbow to the face of Stephens, dropping “Lil Heathen.” From there, Calvin piled on the punishment to the tune of six unanswered strikes, forcing the referee stoppage.
With the win, Kattar got back on the winning track and improved to 5-2 inside the Octagon. Ranked No. 6 in the division, Kattar shows promise as a legit contender for the title. Before his title fight dreams come true, though, he has to get through a stiff test in Ige, who has won six straight fights.
