Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is all set to kick off its UFC on ESPN 13 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, topped by a featherweight headliner featuring hard-hitting contenders Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige. The action gets underway TONIGHT (Weds., July 15, 2020) on Fight Island (Yas Island) in Abu Dhabi. Elsewhere on the card, which airs on both ESPN and ESPN+, flyweight veteran Tim Elliott looks to get back into the win column against the rough-and-tumble Ryan Benoit. In addition, longtime bantamweight banger Jimmie Rivera jumps up in weight to tangle with Cody Stamann in a featured featherweight fight.

Round 1: Both men mobile in the early going. 2-3 from Ige. Ige to the body. One minute in. 2-3 falls short. 1-3, low kick. Left hook blocked. Not much return fire from Kattar yet. Now a jab lands for him. Ige tries some jabs two minutes in. Ige body shot met by a counter left. Right cross to uppercut by Kattar. Heavy counter body shot and he avoids a takedown, dropping some hard shots when Ige turns to his back. Body shot by Kattar, tries to land as Ige stands. Two minutes to go.

Front kick from Kattar. Counter right cross lands for Ige, who answers a short right with a body shot. Kattar catches a kick and spins Ige to the mat, just missing with a piledriver right. Both rip the body as Ige stands with a minute to go. Side kick lands for Kattar. He tries a combo. Kattar steps in with a left hook and gets cracked by a counter right. He opens up at the bell. Close round. 10-9 Kattar.

Round 2: Back to a tentative start. Ige tries a two-piece, lands a hard body shot. Jabs from Kattar. One minute in. Ige falls short with some combinations. Counter combo lands for Kattar, who eats a leg kick. Two minutes in. Ige lands a body shot and they trade left hooks. Kattar’s nose is bothering him after that hook. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Early exchange. Ige tries a body kick. Low kick by Kattar. Body shot lands inside. One minute in. Ige leg kicks. Both land in combination. Hard two-piece lands for Ige. Body shot. Double jab from Kattar. Two minutes in. Plenty of feints, not much clean contact early in this minute. Glancing blows from Kattar. Ige to the body. Kattar 1-2 just misses. Ige lands a right to the body and they trade leg kicks. Ige 1-2. Stiff jab from Kattar, then a hard combination. Ige tries to come back to the body and eats a left hook. Round 4: Ige fires a right downstairs, sends out some jabs. Good entry, denied by a whizzer. Nasty right cross by Kattar that Ige tanks. 3-2 lands clean. Ige tries to shoot, forced to his back. One minute in. Hard elbows from Kattar, who disengages. Low-high 2-3 by Ige. Kattar continuing to advance, sends out his jab. Two minutes in. Ige tries a Superman punch and eats a leg kick. Low kick from Kattar. Another to the inside. Ige comes back with an overhand right, lands a hard hook to the body. 125 lbs.: Tim Elliott vs. Ryan Benoit

Round 1: Elliott switching stance early, pursuing Benoit. Side kick attempt. Sending out lead-leg kicks a minute in. Benoit takes a groin strike, powers through is as Elliott flicks out kicks. Counter right by Benoit. Low kick after taking some kicks from Elliott. Two minutes in. Right hand to head kick from Benoit, who denies a takedown. Lead right lands. More kicks from Elliott. Benoit with a lead right. Two minutes to go. Benoit fires a head kick with two minutes to go.

Elliott goes for a takedown, can’t get it, tries to land on the exit. More kicks. Jabs upstairs. One minute to go. Heavy body shot by Benoit, then a pair of jabs and some good takedown defense. Elliott finally completes a single, but Benoit scrambles to his feet. Clean Benoit jab, taken down at the bell. Elliott tries some last-minute ground-and-pound. 10-9 Benoit.

Round 2: Hard 1-2 from Benoit. Elliott still pressing forward with a high volume of kicks. Hard head kick catches Elliott, who shoots and eats an uppercut before separating. Benoit lands a left hook a minute in. Straight right. Swatting hook from Elliott in response. Benoit comes back with a combination. Hard uppercut after stopping a takedown. They trade near the fence. Two minutes in. Jabs from Benoit. Elliott opens up on the fence and Benoit shoots into a guillotine. Elliott uses it to sweep into mount, though he loses the choke. Benoit regains guard with two minutes to go.

Benoit suddenly rolls for a kneebar that has Elliott in visible pain, but Elliott manages to survive and start punching his thigh. He pulls his leg out and they reset on the feet with just under a minute to go. Left hook from Benoit, straight right. Body kick, left hook . Elliott powers through into a single-leg, cranks on a leg from a weird position and drops some hard elbows. 10-9 Benoit.

Round 3: Front kick from Elliott to start. He shoots, gets denied, lands some hard elbows in the clinch. Blast double denied by a whizzer, knees and elbows. He gets the body lock, throws knees. One minute in. Nasty knee to the head catches Benoit as he turns to face him. Elliott threatens a front headlock and they separate. He appears to have some sort of glove issues. Elliott jabs, low kick from Benoit, who stuffs a shot and lands an uppercut. More Elliott jabs. Two minutes in. Straight right from Elliott, who shakes the hand out afterwards. Body kick and jabs. Benoit combination. Elliott clinchwork. Two minutes to go.

More jabs from Elliott met by a low kick. Elliott slips, eats a left hand. More jabs. Overhand right appears to sting Elliott, who changes levels and eats some shots as he’s denied. Clinch shots from Benoit as he’s taken to the fence with under a minute to go. Elliott gets the rear body lock, loses it. He hauls Benoit to the opposite fence. Benoit throws heavy leather, lands an uppercut and knee. 10-9 Elliott.

Final result: Elliott def. Benoit by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Jimmie Rivera vs. Cody Stamann

Round 1: Rivera low kick, Stamann left hook. ESPN+ futzes out on me for the rest of the first minute. Rivera on the front foot, answers a low kick with two body shots as Stamann fires an elbow. Brief clinch. Rivera low kick. Stamann catches Rivera throwing and fires a combination as Rivera gets to his feet. Two minutes in. Rivera catches a low kick and knocks him over with a counter right. Stamann trying to use the fence to stand. Rivera looks for a takedown, gets reversed. Two minutes to go.

Stamann remains attached as Rivera stands. Rivera rolls his eyes as Stamann stomps his foot. One minute to go. Ref breaks them up from a body lock because, as established, he’s an idiot. counter low kick by Rivera. Heavy left hook catches Stamann throwing. 10-9 Rivera.

Round 2: Stamann hauls him to the fence right off the bat. Rivera pops up from the initial takedown attempt, still tied up. He briefly looks for a kimura grip before turning to face Stamann. One minute in. Rivera reverses and completes his own takedown. Looking for the back. Stamann gets to his feet. Single-leg attempt denied. Stamann reverses position. Rivera looks for an elbow on the break. Back on the advance. Counters land for Stamann against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Low kick from Stamann. Rivera digs to the body, lands a knee. Rivera low kick met by a two-piece. One minute to go. Stamann low kick. Rivera lands his own, eats a jab. Hard exchange in the center. Stiff Stamann jab met by a leg kick. Stamann goes airborne from a knee and eats a combo. Heavy exchange. 10-9 Rivera.

Round 3: Short left hook lands for Rivera as Stamann steps in. Leg kick and head kick attempts. Stamann changes levels as Rivera tries to open up and puts him on the fence. One minute in. Rivera gets double unders and reverses. Elbow on the break, back to the center. Both try head kicks. Hard trade in the center. Low kicks from Rivera. More. Stamann shoots, eats a couple elbows as he takes Rivera to the fence. Two minutes to go.

Right hands from Rivera, then a guillotine attempt. Short rights to the body. Stamann looks for a single-leg, can’t get it and they separate. One minute to go. Good exchange. Big rights from both men. Hard Rivera low kick. Counter right lands for Stamann. Rivera falls short with a three-piece, catches Stamann with a left hook. 10-9 Rivera.

125 lbs.: Molly McCann vs. Taila Santos

Round 1: McCann rushes to the center and eats a 1-2 for her eagerness. Santos sending out some heavy fire early. Good left hooks by McCann after catching a kick. Shifting right hook. Santos answers with a low kick. Hard combination by McCann. Another shifting right hand a minute in. Good 1-2. Santos leg kick, eats a left hook and straight left. Good pair of knees and a body kick from Santos, who gets warned for grabbing McCann’s hair. Body and low kick. Low kick and left hook from McCann in return. Clean straight right. Santos lands a heavy body kick. Two minutes in. Hard low kick, then simultaneous kicks. Santos lands a nice knee and takes a left hook. Shifting right again by McCann, Santos leg kick and body kick. McCaann shoots, take her to the fence. Santos grabs the Thai plum and lands some hard knees. McCann responds with a high-crotch attempt, then a hard elbow with two minutes to go.

Santos changes levels in response and hits a a nice takedown. McCann gets to her feet, takes some more knees. Stanso changes back levels with a minute to go. Short elbows by McCann. Another takedown by Santos in the waning seconds. 10-9 Santos.

Round 2: Santos sending out early kicks. Counter combination. McCann jabs the body, takes a body kick. McCann catches a front kick, can’t use it. Santos puts her on the fence, lands a knee, gets reversed and avoids a takedown. McCann still driving, lands a knee. Harder knees from Santos in return. another knee on the break. McCann with a hard right hook two minutes in, tries to capitalize on a slip and gets taken down into side control. Now mount. Hard elbow. McCann shrimps, gets caught in a d’arce against the fence. Two minutes to go.

McCann pulls her head free, gets dumped back on her butt. Knee from Santos and another takedown into mount. One minute to go. McCann manages to get back to her guard and look for an armbar, eating an elbow. 10-9 Santos.

Round 3: Counter knees from Santos, head kick attempt, low kick. Body kick. McCann wit a 1-3 and body jab. Santos comes back with a front kick. More kicks. McCann looking for boxing combos, lands a spinning back kick. One minute in. Santos 1-2, avoids a spinning elbow. Santos continuing to pick her off at range. Right hand from McCann. 1-2. Left hook, counter right. Santos shoots in behind a jab and drags her down into side control. McCann tries to roll for a leg, nothing there. McCann gets an underhook and tries to stand, shoved right back down. Two minutes to go.

McCann tries to sit up and gets shoved down by a front headlock. She scoots to the fence and gives up her back. One minute to go. Back to mount, elbow. Santos lands punches from the back. McCann tries to stand. 10-9 Santos.

Final result: Santos def. McCann by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Mounir Lazzez

Round 1: Lazzez lands a low kick, fires back well as Alhassan comes in slugging. Counter knees from Lazzez but the punches from Alhassan start getting through. Lazzez manages to tank the onslaught and come back with an elbow. Head kick from Lazzez, another flurry from Alhassan. Body shot from Alhassan, Lazzez smiles and sends out some kicks. Elbows form Lazzez, low kick exchange. Hard right hand by Alhassan, who eats a pair of heavy knees to the body and a leg kick. Two minutes in. Lazzez tries to sneak elbows through the high guard. Lazzez body jab, leg kick exchanges. Jabs from Lazzez. Heavy low kicks. Two minutes to go.

More Lazzez jabs, head kick attempt, checks a pair of leg kicks. Body shot to head kick. Counter elbows. Alhassan lands a jab. Lazzez checks another leg kick, splits the guard with an uppercut and follows with a left hook. One minute to go. Trading leg kicks. 2-3 from Alhassan. Easy double-leg from Lazzez into guard. 10-9 Lazzez.

Round 2: More kicks from Lazzez, picking at Alhassan’s lead leg. Jumping switch kick attempt. 1-1-2 from Alhassan but Lazzez suddenly hurts him with a combination, chasing him all the way to the fence. Alhassan plants his feet and slugs back. Huge shots from both men. They separate, then Lazzez goes back to landing combinations. He takes Alhassan down into side control, avoiding a guillotine. The ref stands them up from side control because he’s an idiot. Counter knee by Lazzez, fires an elbow. Two minutes to go.

Alhassan avoids an elbow, eats an uppercut. Brutal combination work by Lazzez against the fence and an easy double-leg. Alhassan holds onto a front headlock as he gets mounted. Side control now for Lazzez. Ref stands them up from side control because, again, he’s an idiot. Back to slugging in the center. Slick head movement by Lazzez. 10-9 Lazzez.

Round 3: Alhassan fakes a level change. Jab exchange. Both land low kicks. Lazzez tries a head kick. Alhassan shoots right into a knee, but manages to get in deep. Can’t quite secure the takedown a minute in. He pulls him away from the fence for the takedown, Lazzez scoots right back to it and stands. Two minutes in. Lazzez reverses and changes levels. He locks his hands and again takes him down despite Alhassan holding a guillotine grip. Two minutes to go.

Lazzez staying heavy. Knees, solid elbow land for him. One minute to go. Alhassan gets to his rear. He manages to stand and put Lazzez on the fence. Massive swings from Alhassan at the bell. 10-9 Lazzez.

Final result: Lazzez def. Alhassan by unanimous decision


185 lbs.: John Phillips vs. Khamzat Chimaev

Round 1: Chimaev fires a head kick and immediately takes Phillips down with a double-leg. They scoot to the fence and Chimaev starts dropping elbows form guard. Phillips gets to his knees, eats some short left hands. One minute in. Chimaev pulls his base out from under him and takes his back. More punches as he looks to set up the choke. More punches from Chimaev on Phillips’ bloodied face. Phillips trying to use the cage and just getting mauled for his trouble. Nasty elbows. Two minutes to go.

Chimaev continues to smash away as Phillips tries to stand. Brief guillotine attempt. More punches. One minute to go. More and more punches. 10-7 Chimaev.

Round 2: Chimaev scores another easy takedown and looks for the back. back to the fence, more punches. Phillips tries to roll to his knees and Chimaev wraps up a d’arce choke. There’s the tap.

Final result: Chimaev def. Phillips by submission (d’arce choke)


145 lbs.: Ricardo Ramos vs. Lerone Murphy

Round 1: Ramos opens with a tornado kick to wheel kick combo. Anderson Silva-style calf kick by Ramos. Murphy answers with a conventional low kick. Triple calf kick by Ramos. He fires a right hand and immediately transitions to the rear waist lock a minute in. He hauls Murphy away from the fence, lands a knee to the head when he gets back there. Murphy bangs the body in the clinch. They separate. Another calf kick by Ramos. Two minutes in. Murphy low kick. Ramos lead right. Murphy just misses with a counter right, avoids a Brazilian kick and a tornado kick before grabbing a body lock and taking Ramos down. Ramos reverses the takedown and ends up on top in side control. Now looking for the back as Murphy scrambles up. Two minutes to go.

Murphy gets to his feet and tries a head kick on the break. He ducks a spinning elbow for another takedown. Hard elbows by Murphy and Ramos appears to go out for a moment, but manages to get his wits back. Diving right hand by Murphy. More big shots and he pours it on for the finish.

Final result: Murphy def. Ramos by TKO (punches)


205 lbs.: Modestas Bukauskas vs. Andreas Michailidis

Round 1: Bukauskas opens with low kicks. Michailidis tries to come back with an overhand right. Low kick lands for him. One minute in. More kicks piling up for Bukauskas, eats a calf kick. Bukauskas body kick. Two minutes in. Low kick comes back at him. Two minutes to go. Michailidis still targeting the calf, lands an overhand right. Right hand catches Michailidis off-balance. Counter 3-2, calf kick appears to bother Bukauskas. Two minutes to go.

Quick exchange in teh center. Bukauskas trying to reach him with 1-2s, falling short and gets clipped with a combo. Short hook lands for Bukauskas, avoids a massive right hand. One minute to go. Another two-piece and low kick by Michailidis. Bukauskas tries a head kick. Michailidis shoots in the last 10 seconds, gets cracked by Browne elbows that stray close to the back of the head. 10-9 Michailidis.

Michailidis accidentally falls through the gate between rounds while scooting to the fence and the ref believes he’s damaged from the elbows. He calls it.

Final result: Bukauskas def. Michailidis by TKO (elbows)


145 lbs.: Jared Gordon vs. Chris Fishgold

Round 1: Gordon sends out a kick, avoids a right hand. Fishgold tries a flying knee. Right hand to knee, Gordon responds by dragging him to his knees a minute in. Fishgold converts it into his own single-leg. Gordon grabs an arm-in guillotine as he does, then ultimately rolls to his knees. Fishgold powers through it, lands a knee on the way up. Back to the center. Gordon low kick answered in kind. Good combination from Gordon. Gordon changes levels for his own takedown attempt and Fishgold responds with a guillotine, pulling guard. Two minutes to go.

Gordon defending well so far, moves to half guard. He pops his head out and settles on top. One minute to go. Short shots from Gordon, back in guard. 10-9 Gordon.

Round 2: Gordon lands a low kick, avoids a combo. Fishgold looking for uppercuts. Gordon ducks a right hand for another takedown and again he has to fight off a guillotine. He avoids the sweep and takes side control. One minute in. Gordon looking for a kimura as Fishgold grabs his own shorts. Gordon abandons it, Fishgold regains guard. Short ground-and-pound two minutes in. The work continues. Two minutes to go.

More short punches. One minute to go. Fishgold not doing much to stand. Half guard now for Gordon. 10-9 Gordon.

Round 3: Fishgold comes out swinging. He fires an uppercut, sprawls on a shot, and gets caught in a front headlock. Gordon snaps him down. Now looking for the back, can’t get it and they reset on the feet. Fishgold marching after him with 1-2s. One minute in. Both try right hands. Combination lands for Gordon. Heavy counter right. Fishgold lands a left hook and gets sprawled on. Short shots from Gordon in turtle position. More punches piling up. Fishgold looks too tired to roll free. Side control for Gordon with two minutes to go.

Back to turtle, yet more punches and hammerfists. Fishgold just can’t complete the roll. One minute to go. The shots continue until the bell. 10-8 Gordon.

125 lbs.: Diana Belbita vs. Liana Jojua

Round 1: Combinations from Belbita right off the bat. She steps into the clinch and grabs a body lock. Knee from Jojua, Belbita briefly considers looking for the back. One minute in. Knees from Belbita after getting reversed. Outside trip puts her on top in guard. Jojua already bringing her legs up and she wraps up the armbar. Belbita showing some impressive defense two minutes in. Jojua stays on it, though, and there’s the tap.

Final result: Jojua def. Belbita by submission (armbar)


135 lbs.: Jack Shore vs. Aaron Phillips

Round 1: Shore orthodox, Phillips southpaw. Phillips tries a body kick. Shore throws a right hand into the clinch, tries to wrench Phillips down and gets reversed. Back to the center. Phillips head kick attempt a minute in, then a counter right from Shore. Low kick met by A Phillips body kick. Shore shoots in, locks his hands, and slams Phillips to the mat. Quick pass to half guard. Phillips uses the cage to stand two minutes in. Shore staying attached, trying to drag him down and get the back. Knee to the body. Two minutes in.

Two solid right hands, then another takedown and he finally hops onto Phillips’ back. More solid punches as he looks to set up the RNC. One minute to go. Phillips get to his feet and eats some heavy knees for his trouble. Knee from Phillips, taken down again. 10-9 Phillips.

Round 2: Trading kicks to start. Phillips denies the first clinch attempt. Both send out body kicks. Well-timed takedown by Shore into half guard. One minute in. Back to guard. Phillips tries to turn to his knees on the fence and Shore looks for the back two minutes in. Hunting for the choke and he’s got it under the chin. There’s the tap.

Final result: Shore def. Phillips by submission (rear naked choke)
