UFC Fight Island 2 video recap: Figueiredo demolishes Benavidez

Deiveson Figueiredo walked through Joseph Benavidez at UFC Fight Island 2 to become the new flyweight champion.

It was a flawless victory for Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Fight Island 2, as he choked out Joseph Benavidez in the first round to become the new UFC flyweight champion.

What was the high point of the fight?

Less than a minute into the first round, Figueiredo knocked down Benavidez with a right hook and wasted no time in hunting the finish. The Brazilian latched onto the back of Benavidez to try and secure the rear-naked choke. Each time it seemed Figueiredo tried to lock up his arms Benavidez continued to fight the grip.

After knocking down Benavidez with another right hand and following up with heavy ground and pound, Figueiredo was still unable to get the finish. Towards the end of the opening round, Figueiredo knocked down Benavidez for the third time and was able to secure the rear-naked choke to which Benavidez didn’t tap and went unconscious.

Where do they go from here?

It’s hard to match an opponent for Figueiredo next after this win. Other than Benavidez, the only top contender that is next in line is Brandon Moreno, who is on a two-fight winning streak. Although Moreno’s win doesn’t warrant a title shot, there’s not much else on the table for Figueiredo.

It’s a gutting loss for Benavidez who is now 0-4 in title fights during his lengthy career. Maybe a fight against Alexandre Pantoja, who also lost on this card, makes sense for Benavidez next.
