After Gilbert Burns was forced out of his welterweight title fight against Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 earlier this month, Jorge Masvidal finally came to terms with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) which allowed him to step in on less than a week’s notice.
While there were reports that “Gamebred” was in fact already training, he still had plenty of weight to loss in order to make the 170-pound mark, In fact, Masvidal revealed that he had to drop 20 pounds in six days or else he would not be eligible to win the title.
That didn’t stop him from enjoying his pizza, though.
One weigh-in day came, Masvidal proved that even on short notice, making weight wouldn’t be problem as he hit his mark, paving the way for the title fight. What you didn’t see, however, is the grueling process he endured to get there.
In his documentary series “Fulltime Fighter,” Masvidal gives you a sneak peak of the process he went though to hit his mark to assure that his long trip to “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates wouldn’t be for nothing.
Masvidal eventually went on to lose a unanimous decision to “The Nigerian Nightmare” after five hard-fought rounds, though it seems he got paid handsomely for his efforts. He also manages to squash his beef with the UFC higher-ups, which now paves the way for further contract negotiations moving forward.
And while “Gamebred” did lobby for a rematch against Usman, this time with a full camp behind him, UFC president Dana White reiterated that Burns would get his crack at Kamaru before Masvidal gets another shot.
