Former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, will return to action this Saturday night (Sept. 5, 2020) to face rising sensation, Augusto Sakai, in the main event of UFC Vegas 9 inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Winner of three of his last four contests, “The Reem” has proven that after years and numerous grueling battles in the hurt business he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
That was very evident during his win over Walt Harris earlier this year at UFC on ESPN 8, where he knocked out “Big Ticket” in round number two with his patented ground-and-pound attack. The loss snapped Harris’ three-fight win streak while putting Overeem back in the win column after losing to Jairzinho Rozenstruik via buzzer-beating knockout in his previous outing (see it here).
That loss was a crucial one for “The Reem” since he was well on his way to scoring a unanimous decision before getting tagged as time ran out. That would have given him four straight wins and put him in prime position for one final shot at winning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold.
The 40-year old striker has hinted at the possibility that once his current deal runs its course, he will retire from the fight game after two decades of competing in both MMA and kickboxing. A win over Sakai — who has win six straight including going undefeated inside the Octagon at 4-0 –- would be a huge step in the championship direction for “The Reem.”
