Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its state-of-the-art APEX facility TONIGHT (Sat., Sept. 19, 2020) in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 11 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, topped by a welterweight showdown between former interim titleholder Colby Covington and ex-division kingpin Tyron Woodley. Elsewhere on the main card, which airs exclusively on ESPN+, Welterweight veterans Donald Cerrone and Niko Price hook ‘em up for a spot in the 170-pound rankings, while Khamzat Chimaev and Gerald Meerschaert go to war in middleweight action. Rising stars Mackenzie Dern and Johnny Walker will also see battle.

205 lbs.: Johnny Walker vs. Ryan Spann

Round 1: Low kick and sharp right hand from Walker. Spann answers with a counter left and a takedown against the fence. Walker makes it back to his feet, Spann still attached. Spann keeping him against the fence. One minute in. Over-unders. Walker reverses, reversed in turn. Walker manages to separage and fires a front kick, only to get crumpled by a left hand. Spann follows him down into mount, loses position looking for another left hand drops Walker again. Spann shoots, only to eat a storm of hammerfists. Elbows and punches as he defends and there’s the finish.

115 lbs.: Mackenzie Dern vs. Randa Markos

Round 1: Markos looking for punches as Dern steps in. Dern slips and Markos follows her down, only to get caught in a triangle. One minute in. Markos posturing, trying to keep Dern from cinching it tighter. Landing short right hands as she defends. Dern switches to an omoplata sweep and ends up on top in side control. Now full mount, back to half guard two minutes in. Short elbows from Dern, trying to get her ankle out. Two minutes to go.

Dern extracts her arm and bears down on an armbar. Markos defending so far. Hammerfists from Dern. She continues to adjust and crank and there’s the tap.

Final result: Dern def. Markos by submission (armbar)


185 lbs.: Kevin Holland vs. Darren Stewart

Round 1: Stewart looks for an early counter right, lands the next one. Holland lands a right cross and some clinch knees as they jockey for position. Holland puts him on the fence, then eats a shot to the groin. They restart at range and swing leather. Jabs from Holland, low kick from Stewart. One minute in. Holland tries a head kick. Stewart lands a leg kick, answers a right hand with a heavy combination, starts chasing. Holland walks him into a counter uppercut and they slug it out against the fence. Holland ties him up. Two minutes in. Knee from Holland. Foot stomps, boxing the ears. Trading hammerfists to the thigh. Holland trying shoulder strikes. Two minutes to go.

Continuing to whack each other in the clinch. Holland separates. Side kick and awkward 1-2. Stewart slips a combo. One minute to go. Counter 3-2 lands for Holland afte rthey stomp each other’s knees. 145 lbs.: Mirsad Bektic vs. Damon Jackson

Round 1: Bektic shoots in the opening seconds and dumps him to the mat against the fence. On top in half guard. Jackson gets back to his feet, dragged right back down. Bektic punching from turtle, nearly takes the back, denies a guillotine as he re-establishes half guard. Ref tells Bektic he punched Jackson in the back in the head. Bektic pleads his case, but they stand them up anyway. Bektic eats a right, lands a left hook, takes Jackson down into half guard as “The Leech” locks up a guillotine. Bektic pulls his head free, so Jackson scoots to the fence. Two minutes in. Jackson tries to hit the switch and Bektic digs knees to the body. Jackson threatening a kimura, cranks on it as Bektic steps into side control and steps over his head. Bektic again escapes and continues to land in transition. Two minutes to go.

Bektic looking for the back. Staying heavy, landing hard punches. Jackson turns into a single-leg attempt. Bektic answers by again looking for the back with a minute to go. He stays heavy until just before the bell, firing hammerfists in the waning seconds. 10-9 Bektic.

Round 2: Bektic shoots in behind a front kick and takes him down into half guard. Jackson wraps up another guillotine and this one looks tighter. Bektic stacking him, patiently looking to work his head free. One minute in. He gets it out, looks for the back. Jackson tries to hit the switch and Bektic gets a hook in.Now both. He tries to switch to an arm triangle, retakes the back. Two minutes in. Jackson gets back to his feet, grabs onto a kimura. Bektic defending, passes to half guard. He grabs top turtle with two minutes to go.

Jackson trying to use the fence to stand, gives up his back again. Bektic loses the hooks, maintains the body lock. One minute to go. Hammerfists from the back. Now it’s Bektic hunting a guillotine, making a nice transition from the back that we’ve seen from Jack Hermansson. Jackson using the fence to invert, ends up on top. Solid elbows. 10-9 Bektic.

Round 3: Martin pressing forward, looking for combos, puts him on the fence. Bektic gets over-unders and reverses. Looking for a single-leg, gets him to his knees. Jackson looking for a guillotine again, manages to sweep into mount a minute in. This one gets the tap.

125 lbs.: Mara Romero Borella vs. Mayra Bueno Silva

Round 1: Early jab from Borella. Low kick from Silva in return, eats a right hand. Borella shoots under a 1-2 and takes her to the fence. She drags her down into guard with a body lock. Borella postures up for some strikes as Silva looks for armbars a minute in. Nice hammerfists. Silva trying to set up a triangle but has a hand pinned. Now she gets her hand out two minutes in. She switches to an armbar and that gets the tap.

Final result: Silva def. Borella by submission (armbar)


135 lbs.: Sarah Alpar vs. Jessica-Rose Clark

Round 1: Clark lands a good right hand early on. They exchange. Counter right lands, then a left hook in combination. Right hook from Alpar connects. She shoots under a left hand and takes her down on the fence. Clark pops back up a minute in. Alpar looking for trips. Single-leg attempt, eats a Browne elbow. Clark grabs a guillotine as she defends, lets it go. She sprawls on a level change, lands Browne elbows. Two minutes to go.

Knee from Clark. Alpar still grinding on the fence, eats elbows. Clark grabs a rear waist lock and lands shots. Alpar defending with a kimura grip. One minute to go. Clark drags her to her knees, Alpar surrenders half guard while looking for the kimura. Loses it. Clark passes to side control in the waning seconds. 10-9 Clark.

Round 2: Clark looks for early punches, taken down, back to her feet. Alpar grinding on the fence. Knee from Clark. Browne elbows. Alpar looks for a single-leg, denied by a whizzer. One minute in. Alpar falls to her rear right as Clark blasts her with a knee. The ref separates them on suspicion of an illegal knee, but her butt wasn’t on the floor; the knee was legal. They restart with Clark blasting her with punches on the ground. Elbow, knee, elbow, knee. Alpar changes levels. Clark denies and takes top position, looking for an arm triangle. Now pounding from the back. They need to stop this. Chris Tognoni is an idiot. Back to mount, more pounding with two minutes to go.

Round 1: Minner looks for counters and changes levels, denied. Mauling clinchwork. Laramie reverses, looks to change levels as Minner looks for a guillotine. Minner jumps guard for it and there’s the tap.

Final result: Minner def. Laramie by submission (guillotine choke)


135 lbs.: Journey Newson vs. Randy Costa

Round 1: Tentative start. Costa slowly advancing. He fakes a left hand, then obliterates Newson with a clean head kick. Two follow-up right hands and out go the lights.

Final result: Costa def. Newson by KO (head kick and punches)


135 lbs.: Andre Ewell vs. Irwin Rivera

Round 1: Rivera tries a head kick partway through the first minute. Ewell with a jab downstairs, takes a leg kick a minute in. Ewell 1-2, targeting the body. Again. Quick blitz from Rivera, who gets a kick caught and eats left hands as he stands. Rivera tries to shoot, denied, shoots again, eats a hard knee. Stiff jab by Ewell two minutes in. Flying knee and elbow from Ewell. He denies another shot. Jab to the body. Front kicks downstairs. 1-2 to the body, blocked head kick. Rivera tries a combo with two minutes to go, lands on the counter.

Body kick from Ewell. 1-2 lands for Rivera, then a swiping right hook. Ewell to the body once again. Rivera answers with a long right, eats counters. Flying knee by Rivera draws a smile.
