Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is back in action TONIGHT (Sat., Oct. 10, 2020) with UFC Fight Island 5 on ESPN+ from inside Flash Forum on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Headlining the overseas card will be No. 1-ranked bantamweight Marlon Moraes, who risks his spot atop the 135-pound ladder against No. 4-seeded Cory Sandhagen. Before that fast-paced clash of styles gets underway, former lightweight standout Edson Barboza looks for his first victory at 145 pounds at the expense of Finnish phenom Makwan Amirkhani.

135 lbs.: Marlon Moraes vs. Cory Sandhagen

Round 1: Trading kicks to start. Moraes left hand falls short. Sandhagen leg kick. They trade in the center, neither connects. Sandhagen landing leg kicks a minute in. Hard calf kick from Moraes in return. Sandhagen body shot met with three overhand rights. Moraes with a counter hook. Sandhagen lead hook and leg kick. Two minutes in. Sandhagen switching stance, digs a left hook to the body. Jumping knee attempt. Left hand exchange. Sandahagen body kick. Moraes looking to counter, jabs the body. Sandhagen spinning back kick whiffs adn he blocks a spinning back fist. Sandhagen uppercut with two minutes to go.

Good left hook by Moraes. Sandhagen advancing, throwing volume. Moraes tries to spin again, takes a right hand. One minute to go. Sandhagen body kick. Trading jabs. Another body kick, then a knee to the body met by a Moraes left hook. Moraes catches a body kick and takes him down in the waning seconds. 10-9 Sandhagen.

Round 2: They trade low kicks to start. Sandhagen prodding with the lead hand, tries a head kick. Leg kick connects. Moraes rips a right hand to the body. Sandhagen retreats, steps forward, and floors Moraes with a wheel kick. He jumps on Moraes as he tries to roll free and slams home punches for the finish.

Final result: Sandhagen def. Moraes by TKO (wheel kick and punches)


145 lbs.: Edson Barboza vs. Makwan Amirkhani

Round 1: Barboza advancing to start the round. Low kick lands for him, met by a right hand. One minute in. Barboza leg kick. Another after a brief staring contest. Body kick. Two minutes in. Body kick once again. Good right hand downstairs. Amirkhani lands a stiff jab. More body work from Barboza. Two minutes to go.

Amirkhani tries a flying knee. He shoots, denied, eats a body shot for his trouble. Right uppercut into the clinch. Barboza denies the trip attempts with a minute to go. Low kick lands for him. Straight right upstairs. Amirkhani catches a body kick and takes him down into guard before the bell. 10-9 Barboza.

Round 2: Lead right from Barboza, up-jab by Amirkhani. Amirkhani uppercut met by a body shot. Body kick from Barboza. Low kick a minute in. Jab exchange. Heavy right to the body. Two minutes in. As I’m about to write that both men are tentative, Barboza floors him with a straight right. Amirkhani sits up into a takedown attempt and Barboza looks to set up an anaconda choke. Back to a standard sprawl, separates with two minutes to go.

Another right stings Amirkhani, who shoots in deep and gets sprawled on. They stand and separate. One minute to go. Another straight right and again Amirkhani goes down. Barboza gets the anaconda deeper this time, can’t get it. Amirkhani shoots, brings him down against the fence in the last few seconds. Elbows to end the round. 10-9 Barboza.

Round 3: Barboza tries a body kick. Counte right connects. Lead right. Amirkhani shoots, sprawled on, tries a flying knee and trips him down against the fence a minute in. Barboza grabs a kimura grip. Two minutes in. Full guard. Barboza briefly looks for a triangle. Two minutes to go.

Barboza just holding him close, Amirkhani unable to pass. Nice elbow from the Finn. Ref stands them up with a minute to go. Big left hook from the Brazilian. Body kick follows. Amirkhani drops from another right hand for a moment. Barboza misses a wheel kick, busts him with a left hand. Hard body shot. 10-9 Barboza.

Final result: Barboza def. Amirkhani by unanimous decision


265 lbs.: Ben Rothwell vs. Marcin Tybura

Round 1: Rothwell comes out throwing. Continuing to advance and unload punches. Tybura weathering it so far, lands a right hand on the break. Another right hand a minute in. Rothwell low kick met by a two-piece. Rothwell right hand. Tybura lands a 1-2 and Rothwell looks to trade with him. 3-2 from the Pole. Rothwell walking forward, lands a combo and leg kick. Good exchange in the center. Jab exchange. Two minutes to go.

Hard straight left from Tybura. Straight right from Rothwell in return and he sneaks a body kick into the combo. Body kick from Tybura, body punch from Rothwell. Clinch exchange. One minute to go. Body kick by Tybura. 2-3. Rothwell steps in and they slug in the clinch. Rothwell slips throwing a head kick and eats an uppercut. 10-9 Rothwell.

Round 2: Tybura straight left, Rothwell low kick. Right hand exchange, Tybura leg kicks. Combinations from Rothwell. Tybura targeting the lead leg, eats a right hand a mintue in. nice right hook by Rothwell catches Tybura circling. He reverses on the fence. Combination from Tybura on the break. Straight left lands two minutes in. Rothwell leg kick, heavy body shot. Tybura lands a body kick and puts him on the fence briefly. Rothwell clinch uppercuts. Good knee by Tybura. Rothwell with a nice combination. Two minutes to go.

Low kick lands for Tybura. Rothwell advancing, denies a level change, eats a knee on the break. He lands a low kick, eats a straight left. 2-3 by Tybura. Rothwell presses forward with a combo, walks into an uppercut. They trade left hands with a minute to go. Overhand left by Tybura. They trade low kicks. Hard straight left. Rothwell continues to advance, getting caught coming in, lands a nice body shot. 10-9 Tybura.

Round 3: Tybura landing combos early. Body kick met by an overhand right. Counter right connects. Combination in the center. Rothwell with a nice body shot, continuing to press forward and fire volume. Low kick from Rothwell, eats a body kick in return. One minute in. Tybura counter right, avoids flurries. Trading lefts. Tybura’s constantly picking him off. Right hand exchange. Nice head movement. He lands an uppercut and takes Rothwell down against the fence. Landing punches from guard. Two minutes to go.

Rothwell briefly considers a triangle. More short punches by Tybura. Elbows as well. One minute to go. The punches and elbows continue to pile up until the bell. 10-9 Tybura.

Final result: Tybura def. Rothwell by unanimous decision


185 lbs.: Dricus Du Plessis vs. Markus Perez

Round 1: Perez on the front foot to start. He counters a low kick, eats a straight right. Du Plessis sending out kicks. Low kick from Perez answered in kind. Hard body kick a minute in. More low kicks from Du Plessis in return. Overhand right falls short. Perez continuing to pressure. Combination by Du Plessis, straight right. They trade near the fence two minutes in. Low kick exchange. Du Plessis tries to blitz. More low kicks after Perez lands a combo. Two minutes to go.

Both try to blitz. Good right hands by Du Plessis and a left hook catches Perez trying a spinning elbow. “Maluko” goes down face-first as Du Plessis follows him down with heavy blows to put him out

Final result: Du Plessis def. Perez by KO (punches)


265 lbs.: Tom Aspinall vs. Alan Baudot

Round 1: Jab lands for Baudot to start. He tries to spin as Aspinall tries 1-2s. Low kick lands. One minute in. Nice back elbows from Baudot as Aspinall tries to open up. Aspinall responds with a takedown directly into mount. Hard punches and there’s the stoppage.

Final result: Aspinall def. Baudot by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Ilia Topuria vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1: Topuria answers a flying knee with a left hook as he presses forward. Counter right attempt. 1-1-2 to the body, left hook downstairs. Head kick from Zalal, then a calf kick. One minute in. Counter combo from Topuria. Overhand just misses, he eats a body kick in return. He shoots, looks for a single-leg two minutes in. Zalal reverses, but gets lateral dropped into side control. Topuria passes right to mount. Looking for the arm triangle, now looking for the back, then a guillotine transition with two minutes to go.

Zalal tries to stand, forced back down as Topuriia looks to turn it into an anaconda choke. Back to the guillotine and that looks deep. One minute to go. Topuria takes mount, then locks up the anaconda. Impressive survival by Zalal and now Topuria’s looking for the back. Banana split attempt, but Zalal manages to separate and land a body kick. Topuria to the body, caught in a guillotine at the bell. 10-9 Topuria.

Round 2: Zalal low kick met by an overhand right. He tries a single-leg, transitions to a double. One minute in. Topuria briefly looks for a guillotine. Browne elbows. Two minutes in. They separate. Good combo by Topuria, answers a knee with a body shot. Zalal looking a bit wild as Topuria marches forward. 3-2 from Topuria. He takes Zalal down off a knee. On top in guard with two minutes to go.

Topuria passes to half guard and looks for a guillotine. Short elbow, now a no-arm guillotine. Zalal manages to survive, but Topuria takes the back with a minute to go. Zalal slips out and looks for the back in return. He slips off after getting a hook in, Topuria back on top. Zalal goes for a kneebar, nothign there. 10-9 Topuria.

Round 3: Topuria avoids a knee and hits another double-leg into half guard. Zalal looking for a kimura, which allows Topuria to pass. Topuria with another banana split into a back take a minute in. Zalal avoids the RNC and spins into guard. Hard elbow as they stand. Knee before they separate. Topuria shoots and Zalal pulls guard on a guillotine two minutes in. No dice. Topuria passes to half guard. Now to mount, spins for the back with two minutes to go.

Both hooks in, looking for the RNC. Zalal survives and turns into guard, then they stand. Zalal stalking after him. Good right hand. Head kick attempt. One minute to go. Topuria ducks a left hook and briefly drags him down. Zalal pops back up, Topuria still attached. Hard left hook by Topuria on the break. Zalal tries a flying knee and gets taken down into guard. 10-9 Topuria in a great fight.

Final result: Topuria def. Zalal by unanimous decision


185 lbs.: Tom Breese vs. K.B. Bhullar

Round 1: Low kick lands for Breese, who comes out southpaw. Jabs landing. Bhullar tries a combination. Low kicks landing for Bhullar. One minute in. More jabs from Breese, then he follows up with a crushing straight left that Bhullar absorbs. Another big left. Bhullar ties up, lands a knee. Breese answers with a jab that floors Bhullar, then cracks him with hammerfists until the ref intervenes.

Final result: Breese def. Bhullar by TKO (punches)


265 lbs.: Chris Daukaus vs. Rodrigo Nascimento

Round 1: Early counter right lands for Daukaus, who faollows up with a left hook that floors Nascimento. Daukaus follows him down into guard, dropping elbows. Huge left hand, then he punishes Nascimento as the Brazilian attempts to stand to secure the finish.

Final result: Daukaus def. Nascimento by TKO (punches)


185 lbs.: Joaquin Buckley vs. Impa Kasanganay

Round 1: Trading bombs to start. Buckley appears to sting him and puts him on the fence. He changes levels, separates when nothing’s there. One minute in. Buckley tries a head kick, lands a low kick that’s answered in kind. Hard counter right from Kasanganay, who takes a side kick and low kick. Knee from Kasanganay met by some haymakers. Buckley ties up and takes him down into guard. Heavy elbows. Kasanganay scoots to the fence and stands. Knee on the break. Two minutes to go.

Kasanganay whiffs on some big rights. Kick exchange. Hard straight right connects. Front kick attempt. Buckley cracks him with a straight left and they trade. One minute to go. 2-1 from Buckley. Kasanganay right cross. Calf kick stings Buckley. Buckley with a glancing Brazilian kick, then a round kick through the guard. Kasanganay with a nice combination and straight right. Fun round, capped by a Buckley flying knee, 10-9 Buckley.

Round 2: Buckley active early. Both land left hands. Quick trade in the center, right from Kasanganay a minute in. Buckley tries a head kick. Kasanganay knee adn right hand on the counter. Big left hook. Buckley tries to answer with haymakers. Kasanganay catches a kick, only for Buckley to fire a Raymond Daniels-style spinning back kick to the face with the free foot. Kasanganay slowly topples to the mat on the wrong end of a Knockout of the Year candidate.

Final result: Buckley def. Kasanganay by KO (spinning back kick)


135 lbs.: Ali AlQaisi vs. Tony Kelley

Round 1: Both look for low kicks to start. Kelley advancing, taken down throwing a a head kick but is potentially in position to set up a triangle. AlQaisi stacking a minute in. Kelley tries to clamp down, loses it, spins to his knees as AlQaisi grabs a front headlock. Knees to the body from AlQaisi. Two minutes in. Kelley not doing anything to try and stand. AlQaisi finally manages to grab the guillotine, ultimately pulling guard on it with two minutes to go.

Kelley gets his head free. AlQaisi ties back up as he stands and takes him down. Kelley locks up a bizarre pseudo-triangle. One minute to go. Kelley looking to turn it into an armbar. It looks super deep, but AlQaisi survives;. Fun round. 10-9 AlQaisi.

Round 2: Jab from Kelley, overhand right from AlQaisi. AlQaisi leg kick. Kelley answers in kind. One minute in. 1-1-2 from Kelley. Low kick. AlQaisi tries a 1-2. He catches a leg kick adn grabs a front headlock. No luck setting up the guillotine two minutes in. They separate. Hard knee and a right hand sting AlQaisi, who ties up and eats knees. Kelley counters a throw into top position and starts dropping elbows. Two minutes to go.

AlQaisi makes it back to his feet and puts him on the fence. Body lock takedown into side control. One minute to go. Kelley regains guard, no triangle. AlQaisi looks for a guillotine at the bell. 10-9 Kelley.

Round 3: Kelley comes out punching, gets wrapped up and taken down. He gets right back to his feet and separates. AlQaisi tries a head kick, then leans into another knee. Heavy follow-ups by Kelley and he follows him down. Looking to set up a guillotine. One minute in. Now trying a d’arce, no dice. AlQaisi gets to his feet, gets pressed against the fence. Kelley counters the trip and separates. Counter right lands for AlQaisi. Two minutes in. AlQaisi tries to change levels, lands a combination. Kelley tries to set up an uppercut and takes a right hand. Kelley lands a jab, eats an uppercut, lands a knee to the body. Spinning back fist from AlQaisi connects and he follows up with a high kick and back fist attempt. Two minutes to go.

AlQaisi tries a 1-2, changes levels, takes a groin strike on the break. They continue after a while. Low kicks from AlQaisi. Kelley tries a jumping knee. One minute to go. AlQaisi tries to spin and they exchange. He shoots, denied. Low kick lands. Kelley gets taken down at the bell, eats a leg kick. 10-9 Kelley.

Final result: Kelley def. AlQaisi by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Giga Chikadze vs. Omar Morales

Round 1: Low kick and switch kick attempt from Chikadze to start. Calf kick and counter right. Another calf kick. Threatening with more kicks, quick boxing exchange. Body kick connects. One minute in. Hard right hand in combination from Chikadze. Morales answers a body kick with a right cross. Two minutes in. Chikadze just misses with a wheel kick, stumbles him with a counter left. Another body kick and overhand left as he fights off the back foot. Same shots again and Morales ties up. Two minutes to go.

They separate. Calf kick from Chikadze, who’s in total control so far. Another. Morales advancing but having no success as he walks into a left with a minute to go. Morales leg kick, eats a nasty one to the body. Chikadze steps in with a knee, takes a glancing right. 10-9 Chikadze.

Round 2: They trade and Chikadze flubs a throw. Morales ends up on top on the fence, holding onto a body lock. Jockeying for position a minute in. Chikadze separates. Morales low kick, Chikadze body kick. Two minutes in. Morales slips, lands a jab a few seconds later. Low kick lands for him. Chikadze lands a cross counter and they trade jabs. Two minutes to go.

Clean overhand left from Chikadze. Next one falls just short. Body kick lands. Morales lands a 1-2 and forces him back, but eats a left hook. One minute to go. Good head movement from Chikadze. They trade in the center. Stiff jabs by Chikadze. Big counter punches, hard body kick and straight left. Morales unable to answer back. 10-9 Chikadze.

Round 3: Nice exchange to start the round. Chikadze tries a head kick. Morales still walking after him, quick trade a minute in. Morales tries to tie up on the fence, whiffs on the break. Low kick from Chikadze. Morales kick falls short two minutes in. Chikadze lands a body kick and overhand left, then a looping right that catches Morales kicking. Morales answers a jab with a right hand, takes another body kick and overhand left. Hard overhand left and rigth with two minutes to go.

An overhand right finally sends Morales to the ground and Chikadze tries to pound him out. Heavy shots from guard. Morales manages to survive, separate and stand. Chikadze looking for the kill shot. One minute to go. One minute to go. Long right from Chikadze, whiffs on an overhand left. Morales tries a body kick. Chikadze axe kick falls short. Morales pops him with a right cross, walks into a left. Chikadze misses with a rolling thunder. 10-8 Chikadze.
