Conor McGregor has accepted the UFC’s offer to fight Dustin Poirier in January 2021.
Conor McGregor won’t be fighting again this year, but the former two-weight UFC champion says he’s accepted an offer to rematch Dustin Poirier in January 2021.
McGregor’s announcement comes after him and Poirier had discussed a potential fight over the last few weeks. At first, they agreed to an exhibition sparring match for charity in December – a bout that would have no affiliation with the UFC. That idea went silent, but McGregor then said he agreed to fight Poirier, provided that it would happen by the end of the year.
UFC president Dana White said the fight wouldn’t take place in 2020 due to the promotion’s calendar being set for the rest of the year, and instead offered January of next year,
Today, McGregor tweeted that he has accepted the offer.
I accept, Jan 23rd is on!
My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium. Proper Style! Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans!
Then Manny. #McGregorSportsandEntertainment— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) October 14, 2020
“I accept, Jan 23rd is on! My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium,” McGregor wrote. “Proper Style! Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans! Then Manny.”
Whether McGregor will get his wish for fans at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington is up in the air. This week Texas became the second US state to top 800,000 cases of COVID-19. Currently the state’s government only allows for 50 per cent capacity at sports venues in Texas.
McGregor (22-4) hasn’t fought since knocking out Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds in January. Meanwhile, Poirier (26-6, 1NC) won a back-and-forth decision against Dan Hooker in June. The two men originally met in 2014, with McGregor picking up a first-round TKO victory.
