Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will bring its stylized brand of violence back to “Sin City” this weekend with the UFC Vegas 13 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which takes place TONIGHT (Sat., Nov. 7, 2020) by way of ESPN+ and ESPN2 from inside APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining duties will fall to Light Heavyweight contenders Thiago Santos and Glover Teixeira, who battle for a spot in the 205-pound title chase. In the UFC Vegas 13 co-main event, former Heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski looks to quell the uprising of Canadian “Bulldozer” Tanner Boser.

205 lbs.: Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira

Round 1: Santos tries a front kick, then both paw at each other with punches. Brief spin attempt. Right hook catches Teixeira, who tries to shoot and gets clobbered to the ground by subsequent punches. Teixeira keeps shooting, dragging him to the mat despite eating Browne elbows. Santos uses the fence to stand, then gets slammed into mount. He regains half guard, eating shots from Teixeira. Two minutes in. Back to mount steps Teixeira, back to half guard. Considers isolating an arm. Right hands landing. Two minutes to go.

More hard elbows and punches. Santos regains guard. Steady shots with a minute to go. Teixeira hops into half guard. 10-9 Teixeira.

Round 2: Leg kick from Santos to start the round. Body kick connects. Teixeira lands a lead right and follows it with a takedown into guard. One minute in, working from half guard. Teixeira opens up with some heavier shots two minutes in. Staying heavy. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Teixeira shoots immediately, prompting Santos to first deny it and then floor him with a left hand. Santos tries to swarm on the ground, switches to elbows from half guard. One minute in. Round 1: Boser mobile as usual, has a low kick checked. Next kick connects. One minute in. Nobody’s committed to a major strike yet. Arlovski falls short with a 1-2. Boser switching stance. Two minutes in. Arlovski double jab falls short, as does a Boser head kick. Arlovski tries a leg kick. Shifting left from Boser, Arlovski comes back with a right hand and takes a leg kick. Round 1: Barcelos lands a front kick to the body. Taha flicking out the jab. Another front kick from Barcelos, then a low leg kick. Taha 1-2-3 falls short. One minute in. Left hook from Barcelos, then another calf kick that again knocks Taha over. Counter right, then on the lead, then hard uppercuts. Left hook hurts Taha on the fence and Barcelos follows with big knees. Taha knocks him back with a left hook that prompts a level change two minutes in. High-amplitude takedown from Barcelos, then directly to mount. Looking for the RNC. Taha scrambling well. One hook in for Barcelos, then the other with two minutes to go.

Good explosion from Taha to spin into guard. Elbows from Taha as Barcelos turns for an armbar. Good scramble, Taha holding onto a rear waist lock. Nice elbow with a minute to go. Barcelos grabs double unders, can’t get the takedown and they separate. Another calf kick from Barcelos, who answers a pair of left hooks with a jump knee. Good exchange, left hook from Barcelos. Round 2: They trade left hooks in the center. Both sling big right hands that hit forearm. Counter knee from Barcelos, 1-2 through the guard, body kick. One minute in. He tries another jump knee. 1-2-3 from Taha. Body kick comes back at him. Inside low kick catches him in the nards. They resume two minutes in. Left hook by Barcelos. Double jab. Inside low kick, 1-2. Taha with his own leg kick, having issues landing his punches. More body kicks by the Brazilian. Calf kick connects, then another and a right cross behind it. Two minutes to go

Round 3: More flowing offense from Barcelos. Taha swings big, eats a calf kick. Brutal punches on the fence from Barcelos, who then hits an easy takedown. Side control, looking for the back. One hook in a minute in. Looking for the RNC but doesn’t have the angle. Guard now, then half guard. Ground-and-pound. Taha tries to spin for a leg, uses it to scramble to his feet. They separate. Low kick from Taha. Trading near the fence with two minutes to go.

Overhand right slips around Barcelos’ guard. Trading lefts. Trading more lefts. Exchanging in the center, Taha answers a low kick with a left hook. Great exchanges, hard cross by Barcelos. One minute to go. Punches to low kicks. Sneaky hook. 1-2. He ducks a wild left hook. Counter knee, then a calf kick that knocks Taha over. Taha shoots and hauls him to the fence in return. 145 lbs.: Giga Chikadze vs. Jamey Simmons

Round 1: Early jab from Chikadze, head kick just misses. Simmons shoots in, holds a death grip on Chikadze’s wrist but can’t do anything with it. One minute in. Body kick from Chikadze. Straight left misses. Two minutes in. Simmons shoots through a straight left to grab double unders. Chikadze looks for a whizzer throw, then separates. Two minutes to go.

Simmons lands a straight right, then a glancing knee after shooting. Hard body kick lands for Chikadze, then a head kick that sends Simmons to the mat, where Chikadze pounces on him with finishing punches.

Final result: Chikadze def. Simmons by TKO (head kick and punches)


115 lbs.: Claudia Gadelha vs. Yan Xiaonan

Round 1: Exchanging punches to start. Gadelha knocks her back with a jab and they slug until she grabs double unders for a takedown into guard. One minute in. Yan scoots to the fence and ultimately makes it back to her feet. Two minutes in. Gadelha tries an outside reap, can’t get it, keeps her on the fence. Knees from Yan as she defends. Two minutes to go.

Gadelha gets double unders. Trading knees inside. Ref separates them with a minute to go. 2-3 lands for Yan, who gets taken down after landing a leg kick. Both land elbows in guard. 10-9 Gadelha.

Round 2: Yan firing head as always. They trade 2-3s. 1-2, 1-2-3 from Yan. They trade in the center. Gadelha feints a level change a minute in. Yan looks for a hook kick. Good left hook. Jab exchange. Counter 1-2 from Yan two minutes in. More counters in the center. They trade left hooks. Gadelha whiffs on an overhand. Two minutes to go.

1-2 from Gadelha, who’s getting badly outworked this round. Yan with a counter right as she angles off. Hard left hook lands for Gadelha in the center. Big right by Yan as they exchange. Round 3: Gadelha shoots early, gets underhooks against the fence. Knees from Yan as she defends. One minute in. Over-unders now. Yan tries an elbow, separates. Good jab. Gadelha lands one of her own, is denied on a level change and eats a knee. More jabs landing for Yan two minutes in. Gadelha shoots and takes her to the fence again. Yan reverses. Two minutes to go.

Round 1: Giles immediately lands a takedown against the fence. Lewis uses the fence to get back to his feet. Giles grinding him against it. One minute in. Giles with a left on the break, ties back up. Lewis avoids a takedown and they trade as they stand. Back to the center. Two minutes in. Lewis 3-2 falls short. Giles winds up for a big uppercut and gets hauled to the fence, where he gets reversed. Lewis reverses with two minutes to go.

Short knees from Lewis. Lewis tries an elbow, lands another knee downstairs as he takes him to another part of the fence. They separate with just under a minute to go. Jab catches Lewis coming in and drops him. Giles follows him down into half guard. 10-9 Giles.

Round 2: Lewis catches a low kick, can’t use it. Stiff jab from Giles. Cross counter lands for Lewis a minute in. Body shots. Head kick misses. Counter jab to body shot. Giles pops him with another jab. Two minutes in. Another sharp jab. Check hook lands for Lewis. Two minutes to go.

Jab exchange, counter right by Lewis behind it. Knee stomp and a sharp right cross land for Giles. One minute to go. Giles continuing to patiently advance, cracks him with yet another jab. Lewis considers a level change. 1-2 downstairs. 10-9 Giles.

Round 3: Straight right, jabs land for Lewis. Giles fires a cross counter, Lewis shoots, sprawled on. Giles nearly takes top position, lands a knee a minute in. 1-2-3 from Giles and a clubbing right hand sneaks around Lewis’ guard, taking his legs out against the fence. A few more shots and it’s over.

265 lbs.: Marcos Rogerio vs. Alexandr Romanov

Round 1: Hard low kicks from Rogerio to start. Romanov responds with a blast double into side control. Rogerio scrambles to his feet, lands another heavy low kick and some short punches. Romanov powers his way back into the clinch a minute in. Rogerio manages to circle off. Another cracking leg kick. Body shot, good right hand. Romanov takes him to the fence again. Two minutes in. Good knee by Romanov. Trading knees. They separate. Two minutes to go.

Romanov shoots, denied, puts him on the fence. Rogerio with some knees downstairs. Romanov pulls him off the fence and takes him down into side control. Short elbow, caught in half guard with a minute to go. Solid punches. Going for a forearm choke, can’t get it. Trying it again and he actually puts Rogerio to sleep with it. Probably the first forearm choke of the modern era.

Final result: Romanov def. Rogerio by technical submission (forearm choke)


145 lbs.: Darren Elkins vs. Eduardo Garagorri

Round 1: Left hook from Elkins, who shoots through a knee for a takedown against the fence. Low mount. Garagorri stands, spun back to the mat a minute in. Back up, tripped back down. Back up, counters the outside trip, scramble ends with them back against the fence. They trade on the break two minutes in, then Elkins takes him down again. Full mount, threatens a guillotine for a moment. Garagorri stands, takes some knees. Another level change from Elkins, who avoids an enzuigiri while trying to pull him away from the fence. Two minutes to go.

Garagorri ultimately manages to separate with a minute to go. Left hand lands on the counter. Elkins catches a head kick for a takedown into guard. Landing punches from guard. 10-9 Elkins.

Round 2: Quick shot from Elkins, denied. Hard lefts from Garagorri, but Elkins powers through for another takedown against the fence. One minute in. Grinding control. Garagorri trying to stand two minutes in. He manages to do so and separates. Looking for combinations. Elkins two-piece, tries to shoot from too far out. Garagorri grabs over-unders and Elkins reverses against the fence. Jockeying for position. Knee form Elkins. Two minutes to go.

Garagorri shoves him away. He denies a takedown and lands a pair of hard punches, then a body kick. He slips throwing a flying knee, avoids a back take, blasts Elkins with a left hand as he scrambles up. Another hard straight left by Garagorri. Elkins left hand as Garagorri throws heat. Another hard straight left from the Uruguayan. One minute to go. Cross to hook. Elkins responds with a slam, hauling him away from the fence for a takedown into half guard. Back to guard before the bell. 10-9 Garagorri.

Round 3: Hard left hook by Elkins in an early exchange. Garagorri right hook. Sending out jabs, tries a spinning back kick. Elkins wades in with a combo and shoots, can’t get it despite some nice chaining. Garagorri right hook and elbow a minute in. They trade body kicks. Garagorri denies another takedown. Huge right hand and he tries to blitz, only for Elkins to wrap him up after avoiding a knee. Looking for the back, both hooks in. Body triangle now, playing backpack two minutes in. There’s the RNC and a palm-to-palm grip forces the tap.

170 lbs.: Ramiz Brahimaj vs. Max Griffin

Round 1: Griffin on the front foot to start. Inside low kick connects. 1-1-2 from Brahimaj a minute in. 3-2 falls short. Jab exchange. Right cross to the body from Griffin two minutes in. Tentative fight so far. Jabs from Griffin. Brahimaj combo falls short. Two minutes to go.

1-2 from Griffin. Brahimaj right cross with a minute to go. Jab connects. Brahimaj tries a wheel kick and eats a 1-2. He takes Griffin to the fence. 10-9 Griffin.

Round 2: They trade body kicks to open the round. Griffin right cross, avoids a two-piece in return. 1-1-2 from Brahimaj, who takes an agonizing shin to the balls that looks like it nearly has him vomiting. Still, he returns to action before long. Right hands land for Griffin. Landing to the body as well. One minute in. Leg kick from Brahimaj. Griffin looking more aggressive this round, lands a 3-2 and bangs the body. Good defense from him. 1-2s land, clinch two minutes in. Trading jabs. Brahimaj fires a 1-2 as Griffin circles. Right cross comes back at him. Jab exchanges. Two minutes to go.

Low kick by Brahimaj, harder one from Griffin and more jab exchanges. Griffin avoids a combo, comes back with a right cross. Doing a good job of staying out of range of Brahimaj’s return fire. Another misses wheel kick by Brahimaj, who catches him circling with a left hook. Brief exchange into the clinch. 10-9 Griffin.

Round 3: Trading in the center to start. Brahimaj knocks him off-balance with a jab. Griffin 1-2, brief clinch. Griffin leg kick, Brahimaj head kick attempt. Jabs from Brahimaj, takes that kick to the groin again. They get right back to exchanging. One minute in. 1-2 wobbles Brahimaj and Griffin takes him to the fence. Elbow upstairs ends up exploding Brahimaj’s cauliflower ear and this one’s over.

135 lbs.: Anthony Birchak vs. Gustavo Lopez

Round 1: Low kicks from Birchak to start. Lopez answers a front kick with a right hook, eats a 1-2 in return, hurts Birchak with a counter left. Another hard shot wobbles Birchak and Lopez pounces, pounding the body before taking him down against the fence. Lopez jumps onto his back, can’t maintain it, and they break a minute in. Jab and right cross by Birchak after faking low. Birchak low kicks, Lopez body shot. Birchak step-in knee met by jabs. More body work by Lopez. He changes levels for another takedown against the fence. He takes Birchak’s back as he turns to his knees and starts pounding when the choke isn’t there. Back to hunting the RNC.
