Glover Teixeira sets two UFC light heavyweight records with submission win at UFC Vegas 13.
Just like his May matchup opposite Anthony Smith, Glover Teixeira entered his UFC Vegas 13 main event bout as the underdog. And just like that fight. Teixeira pulled off an upset, securing a third-round submission win over Thiago Santos.
Santos had some success with his strikes, but his inability to stop the takedowns of Teixeira and an empty gas tank proved to be his undoing.
Teixeira’s submission win put him at No. 1 in UFC light heavyweight history in stoppage victories with 12 and submission victories with six. Santos was tied at No. 1 in those categories entering Saturday’s main event.
After his win, which put him on the second five-fight winning streak of his UFC career, the 41-year-old Teixeira called for a title shot against light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz.
“Dana White, come on, man. I’m an old man over here, you’re gonna give the shot to Adesanya and make me wait? Come on, man,” Teixeira, who fought Jon Jones for the tile in 2014, told Jon Anik during the post-fight interview. “Five fights in a row, beating these young guys. It’s not easy. Give me that title shot, man.”
White didn’t disagree with the former title challenger.
“He’s not wrong,” the UFC president said during the UFC Vegas 13 post-fight show. “It’s like ‘I deserve this shot,’ he’s been here forever, he’s on a streak. He looked great tonight.
“What’s funny is every time I count this guy out and think that I don’t know if he’s got it, he proves me wrong. He looked incredible tonight.”
Below are the final fight stats for the main event of UFC Vegas 13.
