Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is continuing its purge after company President, Dana White, revealed the promotion would be releasing upwards of 60 fighters from its bloated roster to make room for the new crop of talent coming in.
And no, it doesn’t have anything to do with fighter pay, according to White.
The most recent fighter to be let go — according to MMA Fighting — is long-time veteran, Matt Wiman, who has been competing for the promotion for 14 years now. “Handsome” is currently riding a three-fight losing streak and was most recently seen getting knocked out by UFC newcomer, Jordan Leavitt, at UFC Vegas 16 last weekend (Sat., Dec. 5, 2020) via slam.
Wiman’s last win inside the Octagon came five years ago, though it’s not really a fair assessment as he took an extended break after defeating Isaac Vallie-Flagg at UFC Fight Night 57 in 2014. Prior to his break, he had gone 6-2, but since his return he hasn’t been able to reach the winner’s circle. He leaves the promotion with a 10-8 record inside the Octagon.
The promotion released Rachael Ostovich just yesterday, which was preceded by four more cuts made by the promotion last week. So for those keeping counting there are still more than 50 cuts to be made in the coming weeks, which isn’t an easy feeling for the athletes themselves especially the ones with losing records.
