Boxing champion Conor McGregor? WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says it’s possible.

If Conor McGregor plans to fight for a world boxing title someday, the WBC could make it happen. According to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, all “The Notorious” needs to do is to defeat a ranked fighter.

“I would say, he needs to face and defeat a ranked fighter, then he would be eligible to be ranked and to compete for a title,” Sulaiman told SunSport.

Sulaiman went on to give examples of fighters from other disciplines who eventually captured WBC gold.

“We have plenty of examples of Muay Thai fighters, who turned professional in international boxing, and they are eligible to fight for the title,” he said.

“We also have amateur superstars like Vasiliy Lomachenko, they come into professional boxing and fight for the title and it’s proven it works.”

This should be promising news for McGregor in terms of the boxing side of things. But if you ask his current boss Dana White, he would rather see the Irish superstar “focus on what he could do in the UFC.” Even if that means taking a nonsensical but highly bankable rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

For now, McGregor has his hands full as he prepares to headline UFC 257 on Jan. 23 against Dustin Poirier in a rematch. “Mystic Mac” expects a knockout victory “inside 60 seconds.”
