Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was an interested observer during the UFC 257 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend in Abu Dhabi, where four of the world’s top lightweights went into battle.

And there’s a solid chance one of them could end up facing “El Cucuy,” ranked No. 5 at 155 pounds. If not, there’s always part-time welterweight Nate Diaz, who treats the Octagon like the Legend of Brigadoon, appearing once every 100 years.

Not long after Michael Chandler announced his arrival in the UFC 257 co-main event, fellow ex-interim titleholder Dustin Poirier upset the 155-pound apple cart by smashing former “champ champ” Conor McGregor, a fight that could have went to Ferguson had this scenario not played out last fall.

Unfortunately for Ferguson (25-5), much of his bargaining power is gone after getting dominated in two straight fights. Dan Hooker is certainly an option for “El Cucuy,” depending on what matchmakers had in mind for the second half of 2021.
