UFC 258 prelims results & video: Anthony Hernandez submits Rodolfo Vieira in major upset

Check out the results and highlights from the UFC 258 prelims, where Anthony Hernandez did the unthinkable by submitting decorated BJJ player Rodolfo Vieira, and Polyana Viana hit a first-round armbar on Mallory Martin.

The UFC 258 preliminary card saw one of the biggest upsets in MMA history when major betting underdog Anthony Hernandez submitted 7x ADCC champion Rodolfo Vieira in the second-round. Hernandez survived an early ground attack, and then started chucking and landing bolos on the feet. Vieira was all sorts of hurt, and survived to the second round, but after eating more flush blows and shooting a desperation takedown, Anthony locked up a guillotine and secured the submission of his life. WOW!

Before that, the UFC’s #13 ranked welterweight, Belal Muhammad, ran away with the scorecards against the unranked Dhiego Lima. Muhammad pushed a crazy pace and stayed in Lima’s face the whole time, but a finish was never manifested. This makes four-straight dubs for Belal, whoo called out “The Leech” Jingliang Li in his post-fight interview.

The first finish on the card came when Polyana Viana jumped guard on Mallory Martin in the first-round, and worked a triangle choke until switching to an armbar to get the finish. Martin defended inside the triangle for quite some time, but Polyana was determined to sniff out the finish. This makes back to back first-round armbar wins for Viana, who seems to have gotten her career back on track after a skid of three-straight losses.

Prelims:

Anthony Hernandez def. Rodolfo Vieira by submission (Guillotine) at 1:53 of round 2: Middleweight

Vieira was quick to secure a lifting takedown and transition to the back. Hernandez rolled to his back, giving Vieira the full mount, and then had to fight off a belly-down armbar attempt. Hernandez managed to scramble up to his feet and started to bomb on Vieira. He was hitting him flush and hurting him badly. Vieira started shooting desperation takedowns, and had to fight off several submission attempts. Despite getting absolutely wrecked on the feet, Vieira survived to the bell.

The second act saw Hernandez bomb away some more, and Vieira was in bad shape. Off of a poor takedown attempt, Hernandez locked up a guillotine choke and tapped out a highly decorated BJJ blackbelt. WOW!

Belal Muhammad def. Dhiego Lima by unanimous decision (30-27 x3): Welterweight

Muhammad went right at Lima, backing him up behind punching combinations. Lima was covering up and avoiding the big shots, but he wasn’t throwing out a bunch of offense of his own. As the round went on, Lima began to score with leg kicks, but couldn’t get Belal to back off of him. Whenever Lima did score something, Muhammad was right back in his face throwing.

Muhammad went right back to work in the seocnd round. Lima kept backing up to the fence and kept getting swung on. He would throw out some really snappy leg kicks, but the punches of Muhammad would be soon to follow. Muhammad kept dictating the pace, pressuring his opponent and not giving him any space.

The final round saw more of the same from Muhammad. He stayed in Lima’s face and kept up with the volume. He was mixing in takedown attempts, which he didn’t convert, but gave Lima something else to think about. Lima looked weary down the stretch, unable to match the pace being forced upon him. Muhammad earned himself a takedown with about a minute left in the match, and although Lima stood up, he had Muhammad attached to his back.

Polyana Viana def. Mallory Martin by submission (Armbar) at 3:18 of round 1: Strawweight

Viana pulled guard early in the match off of her getting a kick caught. She locked up a triangle from her back, and kept switching between the choke and the armbar. She also dropped tons of strikes while having the advantageous position. Viana elected to fully commit to the armbar, and after a couple of adjustments, was able to get the verbal tap.

Chris Gutierrez def. Andre Ewell by unanimous decision (30-26, 29-28, 29-27): 140-pounds

Lots of feeling out went on in the opening round. Both men were throwing a bunch of feints but not a ton of volume was being dished out. Ewell scored with a big overhand right, and then Gutierrez opened up a cut around Ewell’s right eye. Then, just before the bell Gutierrez dropped Ewell with a slick head kick, but ran out of time to chase down the finish.

Gutierrez worked his leg kicks in the second act. He was attacking the inside and outside, and then would go upstairs to the head. Not a lot of activity was coming from Ewell, until he finally decided to press forward. He began to land his straight punches and back up Gutierrez. AT the end of the round, Ewell snagged a takedown and threatened with a leg lock until the bell.

Gutierrez landed a smooth spinning hook kick to the face early in the final stanza, but Ewell was able to roll with the strike. Then, Gutierrez started to push the pace, throwing a bunch of punches and keeping Ewell on the back foot. Ewell kept eating kicks to the legs, but somehow managed to stay on his feet. Gutierrez really turned it up this round.

Gabe Green def. Philip Rowe by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x2): Welterweight

Rowe let his hands go right away, touching his target and throwing volume. He was landing flush, sticking his foe without really getting peppered in return. Green clinched up and earned a takedown, but Rowe was quick to stand up and snag one of his own. Rowe went for an inverted triangle and scored some wicked elbows, but Green defended and locked up an arm triangle during the scramble back up top the feet. Rowe dropped down and it sort of looked like he tapped, but managed to roll out of the hold before the bell.

A heavy leg kick from Green knocked Rowe to the floor to start the second round. They stood back up and Green accidentally kicked Rowe in the cup. Once the bout restarted, Green clipped Rowe with a big right hand that staggered him. Then, he unfortunately hit Rowe in the cup once again. No point was deducted and the bout resumed. Green continued to push the pace and even knocked Rowe to the ground again with another leg kick.

Green hurt Rowe right away in the third round with a brutal calf kick. Rowe immediately started limping and opted to switch stances. Rowe was able to ease his pain by scoring a takedown. He was able to take full mount and eat up a little bit of clock on top. Green kept working from the bottom and was ultimately able to get back up. He dropped Rowe yet again with another crippling leg kick, but opted to engage in the grappling realm and no finish was found.
