In the main event of UFC 259, Jan Blachowicz defeated Israel Adesanya to defend his light heavyweight title.
Jan Blachowicz handed Israel Adesanya the first loss of his career at UFC 259, winning a unanimous decision to defend his light heavyweight title.
What was the high point of the fight?
The first round was very uneventful, with both Blachowicz and Adesanya throwing little strikes as they worked each other out. Blachowica landed a good combination in the second round as he attacked the body of Adesanya.
Blachowicz landed a hard knee after a clinch in the second round. Adesanya responded with a left hand on the break that wobbled Blachowicz. In the fourth round, Blachowicz landed the first takedown of the fight and continued to control Adesanya. Both men had slowed down come the fifth round, but Blachowicz landed another takedown and controlled the round.
Where do they go from here?
It’s time to put some respect on Blachowicz’s name. The 205-pound champ has now won nine of his last ten UFC appearances. In his post-fight interview, Blachowicz said he would like to defend his title against Glover Teixeira next. That fight makes sense for sure.
Adesanya will surely drop back down to 185-pounds to defend his middleweight title next. The UFC has booked a number-one contender fight between Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa for April. Adesanya has beaten both of those men, but maybe a rematch with the winner makes sense for later this year?
Watch it now, later or never?
Now. It was an extremely close fight, but Blachowicz’s wrestling got him the win.
