Colby Covington strives for new lows.
By now it’s clear that Colby Covington will say anything to extend the lifespan of his ever diminishing relevancy. He’s told us all that he’s playing a character, but that doesn’t mean he’s not as big of a jerk as he’s pretending to be.
Recently he showed off just how callous and childish he is by making demeaning and sexual comments about UFC fighter Polyana Viana, which will not be repeated (or linked to) in this post.
Sadly, the comments have been widely reported (and shared across social media) enough that Viana has felt the need to speak on the matter. On Twitter she posted a short message, blasting the comments from Covington as ‘revolting’.
“I have never given room for any kind of comment or judgment about my personal life, but it is not for me to judge the person’s attitude. I feel sorry for those who act so low to try to promote themselves. It is revolting.”
Sadly this is not the first time a male UFC fighter has made inappropriate or sexual comments regarding women on the UFC roster. Even more sadly, since the UFC has never punished such incidents, this probably won’t be the last time either.
Viana is currently on a two fight winning streak in the UFC’s strawweight division. Last time out, at UFC 258 last month, she scooped Performance of the Night honours with her first round submission win over Mallory Martin. Prior to that win she armbarred Emily Whitmire at UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Rakic.
Those two wins broke a three fight losing skid in which Viana was submitted by Veronica Macedo and decisioned by Hannah Cifers and JJ Aldrich. Viana made her UFC debut in 2018 with a submission win over Maia Stevenson.
Before joining the UFC Viana had a 10-1 record on the Brazilian scene, which included a KO win over Amanda Ribas.
Famously Viana fought off a mugger in 2019, leaving that individual a bloody mess for police to take away.
