UFC fighters break out the red panties when they score a bout against former two-division champion Conor McGregor, because a pay-per-view (PPV) showdown against “Notorious” is widely-recognized as the biggest payout in MMA.
Even dwarfing UFC title fights.
Welterweight contender Gilbert Burns won’t get to share the cage with McGregor when UFC 264 pops off this Sat. night (July 10) in Las Vegas, so he’ll have to to settle for red boxers night during his co-headlining affair opposite Stephen Thompson.
Black boxers with red hearts, to be exact.
“My lucky underwear, the wife, with me wherever I go,” Burns said on Episode 2 of UFC 264 “Embedded” (watch Episode 1 here). “That’s the lucky one, that’s the one that we fight in. Let’s go.”
Burns (19-4) is looking to rebound from his technical knockout loss to current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 258, a third-round stoppage that ended the Brazilian’s six-fight winning streak. As for Thompson (16-4-1), who also came up short in his crack at the crown, he’s hoping to build on back-to-back wins over Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal.
No word yet on what Thompson is wearing — and I’m completely okay with that.
