An expert broke down what went wrong for McGregor in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.
Orthopedic surgeon and MMA ringside physician Dr. David Abbasi is back with another instant breakdown of a gnarly injury suffered in the UFC Octagon.
Abbasi’s had a busy 2021 in this respect, with nasty injuries suffered by Chris Weidman, Jacare Souza, Kanako Murata and Jamahal Hill.
This time Abbasi was of course talking about Conor McGregor whose night at UFC 264 was ended with what appeared to be a nasty leg break. It’s hard to point out where the injury occurred with some thinking a break happened off a checked leg kick. The injury happened in the first round, which was largely dominated by Dustin Poirier.
The fight ending was ruled a TKO win for Poirier, giving the American a 2-1 record versus the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion. Check out the video below for Abbasi’s expert opinion on how the injury was sustained and what it means for McGregor’s immediate and long-term future.
The injury for McGregor leaves him with a 3-4 UFC record since beating Jose Aldo for the featherweight title back in 2016. There was also a TKO loss in the boxing ring to Floyd Mayweather over that period.
Before this bout McGregor was talking about challenging Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title in December. However, with the loss, the injury and the manner in which McGregor has conducted himself this week what’s next for the ‘Notorious’ is anyone’s guess.
