Ciryl Gane joins the pound-for-pound elite in this week’s rankings update, but no movement for Jose Aldo (No. 5), who was already ranked four spots above bantamweight rival Pedro Munhoz (No. 9).
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) crowned a new interim heavyweight champion last Sat. night (Aug. 7, 2021) at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, thanks to the technical knockout victory Ciryl Gane scored against fellow heavy hitter Derrick Lewis.
“Bon Gamin” improved to No. 1 in the latest UFC rankings update, ahead of former 265-pound titleholder Stipe Miocic, while “The Black Beast” slipped to No. 3. Gane is expected to unify the titles opposite Francis Ngannou later this year, or perhaps early 2022.
Elsewhere on the UFC 265 fight card, streaking welterweight contender Vicente Luque ran through 170-pound stalwart Michael Chiesa, securing the victory as well as the No. 4 spot in the updated rankings. “Maverick” fell two places to No. 7, just behind Jorge Masvidal.
Here’s how UFC compiles its “official” rankings:
Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.
Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).
