SHOWTIME’s latest offering features ‘Boxing’s newest superstar’ Jake Paul vs. ‘striking specialist’ Tyron Woodley.
We don’t have to wait long to see if 3-0 boxing disruptor Jake Paul can beat a former UFC champion. On August 29th he’ll step in the ring with Tyron Woodley. The whole thing will be broadcast on SHOWTIME; they signed Paul to a multi-fight deal earlier this year.
With the fight just two weeks away, the promotion machine is revving up. The other day SHOWTIME released their first promo for the fight, which features duelling holograms of Paul, whom they call ‘boxing’s most polarizing figure’ and Woodley, who they generously describe as a ‘combat sports legend’.
On their YouTube page SHOWTIME announces this is the “most dangerous challenge” of Paul’s career. That’s fair, despite Woodley being Paul’s fourth opponent in a row with a 0-0 pro boxing record. The video description on YouTube is again generous to Woodley in calling the accomplished wrestler a “striking specialist”.
Woodley comes to this bout after fighting out his deal with the UFC. The former welterweight champion exited the promotion on the back of four straight losses. Those losses began with a title defeat to Kamaru Usman and were then followed by losses to Gilbert Burns, Colby Covington and—most recently—Vicente Luque.
Paul’s last fight was a first round destruction of former Bellator and ONE welterweight champ Ben Askren. Prior to that he clobbered former NBA player Nate Robinson and fellow influencer AnEsonGib.
